So....what's your fave suburb

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!  And thanks for the compliments on our wedding, we had an amazing day!  I'm pretty familiar with the area, I lived in OP, KS my jr and sr years of high school.  Graduated from Sion, the all girls school in MO, in 1999.  We are most likely moving into my parents empty condo for now.  It's in the Brookside/South Plaza area.  They moved to the lake of the ozarks full time and have graciously offered it to us so we can house search and save more for our downpayment.

We are pretty sure we want to live on the KS side.  DHs job will be in Lenexa.  I don't have a job....yet.  Anyone know any dentists looking for a good dental hygienist??  =)  We were in contract on a new build house here in Columbus, but it lapsed when our condo didn't sell....and well now we're moving.  We liked the idea of building, but I haven't found any comparable builders in KC.  Though I haven't looked really hard yet.

So to all the homeowners out there?  Where do you think the best neighborhoods are for a young married couple?  We're looking to keep it at or under 200K.

Re: So....what's your fave suburb

  • Olathe/OP/Lenexa area is always very good. The school districts are very good and I-35/I-435 are right there to take you anywhere you want to go in the city.?

If you want to build on the KS side you're going to have to go further south and east for the most part. Down by 150th or 175th Street.

I also think there are some nice developments in Shawnee. We looked into building but I want to be closer to Hwy 69 and didn't want to be way south.

If you'd like any help let me know! Webster Team would be happy to discuss what you're looking for and show you around. And I'm always around here too so ask away!

  • I lived in the Shawnee area in my teen years. It is really growing, so you might look into it. The DeSoto school district is great. DH grew up in old OP and loved it, but I don't think it's a "younger" area. Like MrsW said, you will find lots of young couples in the Olathe, OP area. Good luck with your search!

  • Don't want to plug too hard, but my DH's father is a contractor. Check out their website if you want

    www.freemancustomhomes.com

My husband worked with him until recently (since things have slowed down in the industry).

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Thanks for the help!

Beth I read your blog, your son is adorable!  I have friends who are also Brian and Beth....with 3 kids, all with "B" names.  Haha.  Small world!

  • I live in Gardner and like that it still has some of the small town feel close to everything.  I just hop on I35 and I am anywhere I need to be fast.
  • Stephy: What school district is Gardner??

  • We live in western Shawnee and built our home in 2006.  The subdivision we live is in very close proximity to Lenexa (and there are few dentists offices out here, as well.).  We are located at Johnson Drive and K-7 highway.  Our subdivision is a Rodrock development (www.rodrock.com) and it is called Grey Oaks.  There are still lots available in the mid price point and the high end homes, as well.  My husband and myself both work downtown and we have an easy commute (although almost 30 minutes).  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  There are other developments at K-7 and 83rd area, which is even closer to Lenexa.  Best of luck!
  • We are in the Gardner-Edgerton school district.  There are many brand new schools in the district.  I have not heard anything bad about them from those who have kids in school.
  • I've lived in Lenexa  most of my life, so I'm a little partial!  I live in west Lenexa right by Shawnee Mission park off of 87th st (right before it turns into 83rd)  I like that I'm close to K10 --spencer is from lawrence and we go back to see his fam a lot, and right off 435 which is uber convenient to get anywhere else we need to go.

We have an older house (built late 60's-early 70's)  but I LOVE our lot, if you go out to western Lenexa/DeSoto you tend to get more wooded lots I think.
