I am cancer free :-)

Hey guys.  Some of you have seen the facebook updates, so I will keep this brief.

For those of you who didn't know, back in February I was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma on my nose.  I had to undergo Mohs surgery to remove it, and then plastic surgery to fix it up.

So...the Mohs surgery went well. But the cancer was MUCH deeper than they had anticipated, so they had to go back in four times to get it out.  They even had to remove some cartilage.  The doc seems to think this was actually something I was born with, a congenital abnormality, because for someone my age to have a basal cell so deep is not normal at all.

The fact that it was so deep and left such a big hole meant the plastic surgeon had to do a lot more than just stitch me up.  He  actually cut two flaps of skin from around the hole on my nose, flip them over and stuck them in and over the hole to fill them in, and sewed the hole thing up.  By that point, my nose was already aching from being worked on all day that the Novocaine injection at the plastic surgeons was basically the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.

But it is all done now.  Last night was rough, because I was bleeding through the bandages a lot and I couldn't get comfortable to sleep.  But I rested all day, and will be resting tomorrow as well, and things are starting to get better.  My face is all swollen, and my eyes are puffy little slits, but the stitches come out on Tuesday and the plastic surgeon seemed to think that things would look fine once it was all healed.

Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers. The facebook updates helped keep me occupied during and in between the surgeries, so thanks for everyone who wrote to me there as well.

I'll be resting a few more days so have a good weekend, everyone!

Re: I am cancer free :-)

  • Danielle, this is such good news.  I was thinking about you yesterday so I am glad that you posted and things are well, considering.  It sucks that they had to remove so much, but as long as you are cancer free... who cares, right?  Anyway, rest up.  Don't push yourself or spread yourself too thin, which I know might be a hard task for you.  Happy you are on the mend.

As they say in my family, here's to your health, because it's too late for brains. ;)
