Cat needs a home!

A friend of a friend needs to find a home for her kitty.  Her daughter has developed a severe allergy to the cat, and they just can't keep her. She is 3 years old (4 in August) and is a brownish gray tabby. She is microchipped, up to date on vaccines and is not declawed. She is a very sweet kitty, and is very affectionate and playful. All other options have been explored and they are getting desperate. Anyone in the Chicago area able to help?

Re: Cat needs a home!

  • Has your friend tried allergy meds for her daughter, vacuuming daily with a hepa filter, air purifiers and keeping the cat out of bedrooms?  If not, she hasn't explored all her options yet.  I hope their daughter has also been tested specifically for cat allergies; many doctors are quick to say that children have a pet allergy without doing the necessary testing, which can have devastating consequences for the pet in question.  If you ask on the Pets board for ways to manage pet allergies you will get many helpful responses (but if you say they want to rehome the cat, you will probably get flamed, fyi).

Where did they get the cat from?  The vast majority of rescues and shelters require that you return the animal to them if you are no longer able to care for it, and can actually fine you for breach of contract if you rehome it on your own without their permission.  That should be the first place they contact.

In any event, this is a really, really crappy time to try and re-home a cat.  Kitten season is starting, meaning that every rescue/shelter is about to be inundated with more kittens and cats than they can handle.  Your friend should try and see if a rescue will do a courtesy listing for them and let her take the cat to their adoption shows while 'fostering' the cat.  Do not let them post the cat free to a good home - there are some sick people out there who will do horrible things to animals listed for free.  An adoption fee ($50 is fine) should be charged, and they should check references (preferably one of them being a vet) as well as do a home check.  Do not let them ship the cat somewhere.  People who ask to have cats shipped to them are almost invariably going to sell it for research, feed it to their pet snake or worse (if you can even imagine).  They should also not drop the cat off at any sort shelter - that's basically a death sentence this time of year for an adult cat at a kill shelter, and it's unfair to take up a space at a no-kill shelter since the cat technically already has a home.

In the mean time, she should just keep the cat in a seperate part of the house.  It sucks, but that's what they have to do.  They made a commitment to this cat when they adopted it to take care of it for life, and the least they can do is make every effort possible to find it a fantastic forever home since they are unable to provide one.

Sorry if this came off as harsh, but as someone who volunteers in animal rescue, it really bothers me when people rehome their animals without really exhausting all of their options (which quite honestly, people rarely do).  I'm very sorry that your friend is no longer able to keep her cat.

  • I do rescue too...which is why I got the email about the cat from my friend about her friend. It drives me nuts that this woman is re-homing.  I am with you about everything you said...it's pretty much exactly what I told my friend to tell her friend.  I'm just hoping to find this cat a good home without it going to a shelter...she sounds like a really nice kitty.

  • Argh, that blows.  I hope your friend's friend actually takes your advice and does what's right for the kitty and that it finds a good home.
