Knoxville?

Does anyone live in the Knoxville area?  What's the economy like there?  Especially in the teaching field.  My husband and I are looking at moving here to attend the University of Tennessee, and I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to get a teaching job.  TIA

Re: Knoxville?

  • I graduated from UT five years ago, so I'm sure things have changed, but I think some of the public schools in and around Knoxville are quite good. My sister recently got her MA in education there and considered staying (until she got a better offer in Nashville!). I'm pretty sure the place she was student teaching offered her a position. So yes, I think you would probably be okay there as a teacher!
  • The economy in Knoxville in general is not fantastic. Hopefully it will be improving soon with the stimulus money going though Oak Ridge. I am not sure about the teaching field though. My husband and I are trying to move back their ourselves and are hoping things improve.
    I heart Ben!!

  • I hope finding a teaching job won't be too difficult!  I'm pretty excited about moving to Knoxville.  My husband and I are both applying to UT. We're still waiting to hear if we've been accepted.  If we get accepted we'll definitely be moving there sometime this summer.

Can you recommend some good areas to live in?  I think we're going to look at rentals for a couple of months and then to buy after we get a better lay of the land.

  • Hi, I've lived in Knoxville for 20 years - a UT alum, too! I'm even thinking of going back to get my master's in instructional design in 2010 ... so small world! I currently work at HGTV.

Teaching jobs were plentiful here a few weeks ago. I found tons of things through Indeed.com or Simplyhired.com.

Feel free to email me at stephwriter@hotmail. Hope we will have you as a resident soon.

The economy is slow here, too, but it took longer to get here. Everything takes a bit longer in Knoxville. ;-) But it's a good place to live and raise a family. There are pros and cons, like anywhere else.

    Take care,

    Stephanie
