MIGHT be moving to Oshkosh

DH has a potential job prospect.  What can you tell me about the area?  Do you like it, is there much to do, how is the housing market, etc.?  TIA

Re: MIGHT be moving to Oshkosh

  • Where are you moving from?  Dh and I went to school in Oshkosh, got married there and lived there for our first year of marriage.  Personally, I did not care for the city itself.  It's very blue collar and not kept up very well.  There are a few nice areas: I enjoyed the UW campus, and Menomonee Park, The Paine Art Center, Fratello's.  Having the outlet mall is nice.

There is new housing development West of 41, which would be a much better choice for housing vs. the east side (old, run down houses).  Do you have to live in Oshkosh?  There are other smaller communities that are nicer in my opinion that are nearby (Neenah, Menasha, etc.).

  • Oshkosh is a college town, but Appleton is a bigger city about 15-20 minutes away.  My family lives in Appleton, and I really enjoy the city.  I would recommend living in Appleton, then having your DH commute to Oshkosh.

    :)

  • My husband and I also went to school in Oshkosh and got married there.  My brother also lives there.  I agree that you need to watch where you live, but I think that's typical in most cities.  Menominee park, the zoo, and the outlet mall are nice.  The Appleton mall is also really nice.  Appleton also has a bigger selection of restaurants and things to do, but even if you decide to live in Oshkosh, Appleton is a short drive.  I currently live in the Madison area and I think housing prices in the Fox Cities are less expensive than here.

  • I too am not a huge fan of Oshkosh.  DH went to college there.  PPs were accurate with it not being kept up as best as it could be.  Suggestion to live in Appleton was great.
  • I have tons of family in Oshkosh.  It is very old, and the houses on the lake side are old (but cheap).  Overall, there is nothing wrong with it.  It has different sections like the college campus, downtown, by the outlet and then by the lake.   Are you going to need a job in the area as well?

  • Really its not a bad town but I think places like Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton are more of people's style around here. Oshkosh is very working class and college town. I have family there that love it and I wouldn't be opposed to working or living there. Don't let anyone scare you off.

  • Don't get me wrong (earlier post) Oshkosh is a great town, but know that Appleton is another option :)
  • Thanks for all the great info ladies.  We're not 100% sure DH will get the job, but it's looking good.  I will also need to find a job, which may be a bit of a challenge.  I think Appleton will probably be the better choice for us.  I've looked around at houses online & they seem pretty affordable.  I may stop by with more questions later.  Thanks for your help!
