possibly relocating to chesapeake area - advice?

hi ladies, dh and i could be relocating to the chesapeake area.  what can you tell me about chesapeake?  tell me anything and everything (job market, housing market, schools, shopping, things to do, safety, etc.)!!  thank you so so much.  i really look forward to hearing what you all have to say.

Re: possibly relocating to chesapeake area - advice?

  • Schools- overall Chesapeake and VaBeach are the strongest districts reputation wise. Portsmouth and Suffolk, not so much.

Job market is better than other places, IMO, in part because people are always moving in and out with the military. Housing market is definitely feeling the bubble pop. We just sold for about 15% less than we bought for in '06. House prices vary dramatically by where you are in the Hampton Roads area, however. VaBeach and Chesapeake have some pretty pricey areas that are in high demand due to the school system and short commute to many companies. Suffolk is a little more rural and has lower prices overall.

There are lots of bridges and tunnels than effect traffic so keep this in mind when looking for a place to live. A short commute can be quite long if you have to go through the midtown or HRBT tunnel. Monitor Merrimack is generally not a problem.

That's the big stuff. Feel free to page me if you have any questions.

  • I originally wanted to live in Chesapeake, but unless you're in Greenbrier area, you are more secluded (5-10 min. to grocery store instead of 2-3 minutes).  I believe housing taxes may be higher there too.

We ended up in VB based on where I got a job.  Schools in VB and Chesapeake are both good.  You can look up specific schools on www.schooldigger.com.

I would stay away from living in Portsmouth or Norfolk.  Stick to VB or Chesapeake.

  • We just bought a house in Suffolk that we LOVE in an area not too far from Chesapeake.  The advantages are that you live close to Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach (I live in Suffolk and commute to Virginia Beach), but the cost of housing is much cheaper.  We bought a three bedroom in a nice neighborhood in Suffolk for less than we could've bought a condo in Virginia Beach.
  • CPS is a very good district in general. Great Bridge is one of the better schools within the district. I work at a local primary school :). VBS are also very reputable. As a former midwesterner, I will say that the housing is very pricey. I still stagger a little at the price tag on a 1970's ranch.
  • I live in Great Bridge (and graduated from the HS some 12 years back?) and it is still one of the best schools in the city.  It is also a rapidly growing area and I will echo what others have already said about the prices - it can be staggering.  In this area though, you get what you pay for in terms of school district, commute, etc.

Suffolk is beautiful and the homes are more affordable - but I confess to knowing next to nothing about the schools in that area.  Also, as a PP mentioned, you will want to keep in mind commute and all the factors of that commute, tunnels and bridges are notorious around here and the Monitor Merrimack is about the only safest bet but even that has its moments.

    GL in your move!!
