My DH and I are close to starting our training for first full marathon, Chicago Marathon! And we were hoping to do some our long runs along Lakeshore. I've seen pictures of a path that goes around the lake, but we are not from the area. Can any one give me the scoop on where to park, are their water fountains, bathrooms, etc? I've googled around a bit and haven't really turned up any info on the logistics of how to get there and if any facilities are available.
Thanks!
CJ
Re: Running on Lakeshore
I'm running my first marathon this year too!
I have run a half marathon before, and I trained with a group that ran along the Lakeshore path. There are several places to park, depending on how far north/south you live. One place is Recreation Drive, which is just south of Irving Park Rd. You get there going under a bridge on Irving Park, or you can exit from NB Lakeshore Drive. Some parking there is a pay lot, but if you take the small driveway south of the tennis courts, there is a small free lot in the back. You can also park off of the Montrose exit, not sure if that is pay or free.
As for water fountains, there are some spaced along the path. I can think of them at Montrose, near the zoo, at the bend in Lakeshore Drive (north of Navy Pier), and across from Buckingham Fountain, but I am sure there are more. (The path has mile markers every half mile... Rec. Drive is near the 3 mile marker. Zero is further north, near Hollywood)
There are also gatorade stations on Saturday and Sunday mornings that are free and run by Fleet Feet. I think they pick them up around 9:30 or 10, but Fleet Feet would probably have more info. I don't think those start until June.
Besides Montrose and the clocktower at Rec. Drive, I am not sure about bathrooms. The people at Fleet Feet probably have tons of info, so it might help to stop in or call one of the stores.
HTH! Good luck!
