Cell Phones / Service

Please share with me your opinions on your cell phone services... our contract is up and our phones are starting to give us trouble.  We'd like to go month to month, because we like our plan but we're looking into other companies and other plans...

What type of plan do you have? What is the estimated cost? What do you like/not like about your plan or your cell phone?    Do you get reception of you travel outside the metro area?

Re: Cell Phones / Service

  • we have sprint and have been with them for about 10 years. ?we get a discount through dh's work, which helps make the decision, but actually when our contract was up this year i shopped around because i get a discount through a couple others through my work. ?we actually ended up staying with sprint. ?we've got great coverage and i just like their phones better. ?i was unimpressed with the customer service in the at&t stores and they don't give you deals on their phones. ?with sprint, you get a $150 credit every 12-22 months with a new contract towards a phone, so that always helps! ?we both got new phones with the unlimited data plan (internet/texting, etc) and 1500 shares minutes (way more than we need) and it's normally 129.99 a month but we get a 25% discount, so we pay right around $110 after the taxes and such. ?

  • I voted for Verizon, but I just recently switched from Sprint. I'm on a family plan with my parents, and my Dad was unable to get good reception when he went fishing on the lake with Sprint. I loved Sprint to Sprint and night and weekends free, all my friends have Sprint so it worked out great with not using a lot of minutes. With Verizon's family plan, I only pay (my parents) $10 a month for service and $10 for unlimited text. So far no problems with Verizon, although my parents did have to up monthly minutes because I went over. Oops! We also have a landline/DSL, and my H uses his work blackberry. If I had to choose between Sprint and Verizon, I would choose Sprint hands down!!!

Sprint- no problems at all. We pay $75 for two lines (we get a discount through DH's work) for 1500 minutes (I think) and 300 text messages.

That's funny you mention that.  We have t-mobil, the lake is the only place we don't get reception.  Dad keeps trying us to get Verizon so we have reception down at the lake!!!!

That is funny. In that case you may want to go with Verizon.
  • DH and I just switched from US Cellular to AT&T.  We were with US Cellular for about 4 years and were pretty happy with them.  They have the free incoming plans, and we really needed something like that with DH's work (he has to use his personal cell phone as a primary work phone).  We paid about $130/month for both of our phones to share 1700 (I think) minutes outgoing and free incoming.  We did have service in smaller towns (it was actually in smaller towns before they came to St. Louis).

We actually switched because silly DH wanted to go with a company that had SIM cards so that it would be easier to switch phones if need be.  I wanted AT&T because I wanted a nifty iPhone.  I'm on a plan with my mom, so our bill is just for DH's, it's still around $130 just for his, but he has an unlimited plan for $99, and a data plan for $30.  I know AT&T works in little areas, where my s-dad goes ATV riding some weekends, we didn't have service with USC, and my mom and s-dad didn't have service with T-Mobile.

DH was also interested in Sprint because they have an unlimited everything plan (voice, data, and maybe text) for around $100, but I told him to spend a little more and go with AT&T because that's what I was having (since I'm on a plan with my mom) so it wouldn't rack up a big bill on my end, and in reality, when you're spending that much on a phone, it's not that much more.  He then wanted to check out Boost or Cricket but I quickly put an end to those companies, I just don't trust them.  I don't see how they can offer unlimited for $40/month and be a quality company.

  • DH and I have iPhones through AT & T.  I really don't have problems with reception.  We pay around $140/mo for 2 lines and unlimited texting.  I think I also get a discount through work.  That is, when the bill is actually correct.  CS is horrendous!  Just for that fact, we may switch.  But love the phone and the reception.

  • I forgot to add, you should inquire about being able to keep your same #. That was an incentive for us when switching from Sprint.
