Dog Help-- Please

Ok, I know some of you work at shelters and have fostered dogs.  My neighbor approached DH about getting a under 1 year old yellow lab puppy into a rescue/foster.  I don't know the full story but she has tried to contact rescue/shelter and it has been several weeks and the place hasn't returned the call (their had been multiple attempts to get a hold of them).

I know that they are really trying to find a home for this pup so any help (names of places, contacts, etc) would be greatly appreciate.  Our place is too small already with our current boy otherwise we would consider fostering.  Please email me at the following address.

Greatly GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Dog Help-- Please

  • Do you know the name of the shelter/rescue they tried? If they tried a breed-specific rescue, it may be much harder to get a lab in there. I'd think that if the dog is that young, shelters adopt those out faster than older dogs. Granted, there needs to be a very substantial reason for them relinquishing the dog.

Do you know if they got it from a rescue or reputable breeder? Many of them have contracts saying that they have first right of refusal, meaning they get the animal if the adoptive owner ever tries to give it back for any reason. It's a shame that they need to do that to the dog- Shelters are so full as it is. :(

Tell your friend to try petfinder. There are hundreds of nearby organizations that they can call to see if they'll take their poor puppy from them. I hope the best for that doggie!

  • Do you have any idea why they are trying to get rid of their dog?

In any event, they will greatly increase their chances if they offer to foster the dog until it is adopted.  This way the rescue will list the dog on their website and petfinder and they can take the dog to their adoption shows, but it will not use any of the shelter/rescue's money (your neighbors should pay for any food/medical stuff during the 'foster' period - it's the least they can do).  And everything the pp said was right on.  I hope the pup finds a home that deserves it!

  • Unfornately I don't know all the specifics about the pup.  I wish I did.  I know that they contacted a breed specific one and Paws.  Since DH volunteers at Paws we got the card of the women working admissions to see that might help to contact her directly versus through a website.

  • oh yeah, what little I do know is that they didn't get it from a rescue or a reputable breeder.  So they really don't have the "return" option.
