heard of the Rail Cats? Gary, IN?

:)

hey there! im a nor-cal nestie popping over to find out a little about Gary - i know its not the greatest city but have heard its close to chicago.

My brother will be playing for the Railcats and staying with a host family .... any suggestions for how to spend his time when hes not on the field?? (so far the top suggestion has been; GET OUT of Gary! :P ?)?

Re: heard of the Rail Cats? Gary, IN?

  • Congrats to your bro, playing semi-pro ball!  That must be exciting for him.  The stadium itself is pretty nice as the city banked a lot of money on it.  I don't and haven't ever live there, but that's what I hear when I travel for work.  In addition, here are some suggestions for your bro:

My first fun suggestion would be to hop over to the Indiana Dunes National LakeShore.  It's about 20 miles east of Gary and it is right on the banks of Lake Michigan.  It's pretty and has a public beach and some fun sand dunes to climb.  If he is into the outdoors at all, he might also enjoy the hiking and escape from the city that the Dunes offers.  In that same vein, there is also some neat summer/lake towns in Michigan along the lake, too.  St. Joe and New Buffalo, I think.  They're a little further away- like an hour or so- but could be neat for an overnight (especially if he has a special someone come visit- they have great B&Bs and wineries!)

If he's more into the city scene, he can hop the South Shore railway at two locations in Gary and ride straight into downtown Chicago for around $10 roundtrip.  It takes about 50 minutes or so.

    Hope that helps!

  • Oh, also check this link out!  It's from the Lake County CVB.  Many of these sights are located outside of the Gary area though- throughout all of Northwest Indiana, often referred to as "The Region."

  • Ok I really thought the rail cats were a professional (not semi) team though independently affiliated? ?I must be thinking of a different team?

Anyways, I do have some friends that used to go watch the games. ?I told them they must be crazy but they said it was safe to go.... ?They weren't LIVING in Gary though so I don't know if asking them would help you any. ?I'm sure the returning players will be able to point him in the right direction and his host family as well.?
  • Thank you ladies!!!!?

I really appreciate it and will forward my brother this info ?:-)?
