The Merion vs. The Mansion

Just seeking opinions if you've been to a wedding at either of these venues. My bro's FI is looking at both. The Merion is really expensive now! $170/person in wedding season months (incl tax/grat). But if she has the wedding in March - it's around $150/person, I think. The Merion includes a lot more - food wise, and she likes the place better. But the Mansion, she can do any month she wants b/c the price is the same as the Merion in the off-season months.

So anyway - just seeking opinions on food/service, etc if you've been to an event at either place. Thanks!

Re: The Merion vs. The Mansion

  • I've been to weddings at both. Here's my 2 cents...

-Merion: Eh from the outside, but gorgeous inside. Probably the best cocktail hour I've ever experienced. Dinner was good, but our server wasn't very thorough when telling us our dinner options. I got the crabcakes which were good, but the "Steak" meal was actually a filet AND a lobster tail... I totally would have ordered that!

-Mansion: We were in the upstairs room, which was a really strange u-shaped set-up. Decor was a little over the top for my liking, but the food was decent, and cocktail was nice as well.

Overall, I'd prob go with the Merion over the Mansion. Are these the only places they're looking at?

  • I think she may look at Scotland Run, just to see a different type of place. Her brother got married at Luciens and I got married at Pine Hill - so she doesn't want either of those.

She's looking for 2011, so she has options but wants to get a date locked in since we all know how hard it is to book a place without time!

  • Scotland Run is nice, too. I worked there (in the restaurant) for a few years, but IMO, they are overpriced... they're probably around the same as the Merion. My big problem with Scotland Run is that there is no hors d'ouevres area, other than the outside patio, so if it rains, you're stuck in the actual ballroom. That may not be a big issue with some people, but it was for me. The staff and food are fantastic there, though. And the facility is always well-kept and well-landscaped.
  • I've never been to a wedding at either, but I heard the Mansion has a weird set up.  It's like an L or U-shaped room so half of the guests can't see crap.
  • Really? When I looked at Scotland Run I thought it was around $110/person. Hmm..good point about cocktail hour. She wants a separate room for that.

I just couldn't believe all the food you get at the Merion - TONS of food at cocktail hour, then all kinds of desserts. I secretly want her to have it there..haha...

  • I had my wedding at the Merion and the only complaint that I had is that the food took too long to come out.  The reception started at 8 and the food didn't come out until 10pm.  I knew about this issue beforehand, but I was told by the Merion that it wouldn't be an issue.  I felt like it really cut the time for dancing.  Not one person complained about the food though.  The cocktail hour is over the top and the menu choices that I had we better then any other place that I checked out.  If you do a Friday or Sunday wedding, your plate price is cheaper, but you would have to pay extra for the filet.  Also, if they decide to go with the Merion, don't work with Sue.  She was on top of me the week before the wedding, but the 17 months before that she was so hard to get in touch with.  I would not recommend her to anyone.

I haven't been to the Mansion since I was 16 so I can't comment on that!

  • I got married at the Mansion and it was fantastic. I looked at the merion but in my opinion it was way too much food andd when we went back with my parents to look it was a ZOO!!!

The Mansion was so elegant we have great pictures and we were treated so special. our planner was samantha- they should ask for her!!

    just my opinion!?

  • I had my wedding at the merion and it was AMAZING...people still tell me our wedding was the best wedding there've ever been too.  Someone mentioned the outside but who really cares about that.  I've been to 2 weddings there after mine, both great.

My sister had her wedding at the mansion and that is where my bridal shower was.  They have a new chef since my sister's wedding but both functions were great.  My sister did not get married in the weird "L" shaped room...she had a smaller 100 person wedding so she had a very nice room and the food was great.  My shower was in the room they use as a cocktail hr.  all glass room floor to ceiling windows...they let my sister (she planned shower) do whatever she wanted and were very accomadating...she brought in her own china, etc.  She's nuts that's a whole other story:)

Both were great but I would avoid Mansion if the only room is the weird shaped one.
