I read a very nice post about this park and how the playground area is really different and nice. Is it worth the stop or drive I should say. Where is it located in reference to downtown disney/disney world.
What other non-disney spots can we stop at that are fun and my 1 year old might enjoy. I know that is a tough one because there is not much he can do, but parks, playgrounds, water fountains that shoot from the ground, etc., are what I am looking for. even places that have fun characters like the downtown disney area would be nice. Thanks so much.
So I guess what I want to know is where do you take your children for fun in Orlando other than the obvious places.
You all have been so helpful.
Re: Lake Eola Park? other kids friendly spots in Orlando-not Disney World
Lake Eola park looks totally fun for kids. It is about a 25-30 minute drive from Disney, depending on traffic. It is straight up I-4 (go east) and smack in the middle of downtown Orlando.
There's also Citywalk at Universal that's fun to walk around. It's like Downtown Disney, but you have to pay for parking.
I don't have a LO, so I'm not too familiar with places that would be good for young children. I'm sure some other nesties can help you with that.
Lake Eola has a farmer's market every Sunday morning... you can browse around to see all the cool stuff they have, and even pick up some fresh fruit for your trip! There are also a lot of great local restaurants around the area where you can dine for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
Downtown Disney has water fountains that the kids can run through and cool off, they also have a new hot air balloon ride that you can go on...
Downtown Disney also has a carosel and train the kids can ride too. I also ride on the water ferries to entertain my daughter.
Lake Eola is a nice playground, I go there often but it could be rather far from Disney if you hit traffic on I-4. If you are looking for just a playground/play area for you 1 yr old then Dr. Phillips Community Park would be closer. If you wanted to walk around downtown orlando (or goto the farmers market too) then maybe go downtown but I personally would drive that far just to let you 1 yr old play on the playground.

I live in East Orlando so I go to a lot of the parks around here but another place your son might like to do is to goto Mount Dora, FL and ride the train they have there, its a little over an hour for the train ride and then you can walk around the downtown mount dora area and grab some food. We goto the bounce house places.
Heck, even at the outlet mall right off of Lake Beuna Vista there is a small playground (although its outside and uncovered so it might get very hot in the summer heat).
WOW! thanks for all that info. you are awesome.
Turkey Lake Park is nice, or it used to be.

also gatorland, that is pretty cool, they just renovated it.
I've only been to Turkey Lake Park once, and perhaps I hit it on a bad day, but I would not take my child there. It was filled with foul language and behaviors I wouldn't want my son to see.
Just my experience Maybe on less busy days it's a completely different park.
like i said "used to be".......
That's why I also clarified that I may have hit it on a bad day. I hate to give opinions on something I haven't visited at least on a couple of occasions, but I had a really, really bad experience my first time out there. lol
The Lego store and statues are at Downtown Disney. The Boardwalk Resort has an actual boardwalk where they have street performers, boardwalk games, candy shop, ice cream parlor, etc... it's nice to take a stroll around, but not too much to do with a 1 year old (my mom works at the resort so I'm quite familiar with it)! However, you can always go to the various Disney playgrounds on property at the 18+ resorts they have. I believe the Animal Kingdom lodge has one, and they also have an area where you can view the animals from the other side of the park... for FREE!
