Got Laid Off Yesterday...Now What?

Found out yesterday that my company can't keep me, the cash flow is just not there.  I work from home in San Diego for a company based in LA.  I worked in the office in LA for about two years, but when I got married a year ago we moved to SD and they created a work from home position for me.  It all came to an end yesterday.  My husband is a law student (unmployed) so it's like a double whammy for us.  May 31st is my last day and concincidently, our wedding anniversary.

Now what?  Where do I start?

Re: Got Laid Off Yesterday...Now What?

  • File for unemployment.  Your state should have a website.

Get in touch with people at your former company who can serve as a reference for you.

If your health insurance for you/your DH was through your employer, you should get info on COBRA continuation of benefits.  It will be extra cost to you, but it's better than being uninsured.

Good luck - I've been there now for 2 months and it's tough out there.  Sorry this happened.  My best advice is to strike while the iron is hot to try to find a new job - reach out to all your former contacts.  A lot of positions are not being publicized right now b/c they get an avalanche of (unqualified) applicants - so companies are only letting the openings known by word of mouth.

  • did they not tell you anything? Usually with layoffs you meet with HR and they go over your severance package, your unemployment benefits, if they have a program to help you find another job, etc.

  • I got laid off on Thursday. Got a very lousy severance package. I am enjoying the weekend and polishing up my resume Tuesday, calling everyone I know and have worked before in the past.

    Good luck.

Take a deep breath & do what the PPs suggested -- apply for unemployment & try to enjoy the weekend.  Then polish your resume & get out there.  Job hunting is your new job in the short term.

Summer's coming so DH can work.  Many law firms hire law students, some at even decent pay.  If he can't get a job in law b/c it's too late or he's already committed to an internship, he can always wait tables.  It is possible to work 20 hours per week & still get good grades.
