Hi girls!!
DH and I will be visiting Portland in August and I was wondering if you girls could recomond some Must Dos for us. Thanks so much for any advice you can give us!
Re: MA nestie visitng
Hmmm... you can visit the Chinese Garden, walk the waterfront, hike in Forest Park, get lost in Powell's Books, go to the Saturday Market, do a walking tour... If you're here on the last Thursday in August, then check out "Last Thursday" on NE Alberta Street.
I think Portland is best for eating and drinking. There are a million great places to eat and get local wine or beer. Portland City Grill is good for the view and the McMenamins properties are popular for atmosphere, although their food/beer/wine is so-so. I like Amnesia and Deschutes for beer. For wine, I like Cork, which often has flights and events - and a deal with some great restaurants to bring in their wine and avoid a corkage fee. Vino Paradisio (sp?) is a swanky wine bar with a good selection. There are too many good restaurants to list... My personal favorites are Ciao Vita, Mississippi Station, Ken's Artisan Pizza, Lovely Hula Hands, Andina, and Fenouil. Misc other places to stop include Pix Patissarie, Voodoo Doughnuts, Cupcake Jones or St Cupcake, and Cool Moon Ice Cream.
If you're interested in going outside of Portland, you can do a wine tour (there are tons of wineries in the Dundee/McMinnville area and along Hwy 99-W, and there are organized tours), visit the coast, go up to Mt Hood, or spend a day at Hood River along the gorge.
I recommend this site for good ideas: http://www.travelportland.com/
BTW - August should be a great time to visit, weather wise. But you may still want to pack a lightweight rain coat or compact umbrella. ...never know
