emergency kit

Do you have one? If yes, what does it contain? On Sunday, after the earthquake I was thinking it might be a good idea to have one ready, even if it has only baby formula, baby food and water. What do you think? TIA

Re: emergency kit

  • Yes, I went through the big San Francisco earthquake in 1989 and we didn't have water, power or phone for many days, so Iearned then you have to be prepared.

We keep in our garage two very large plastic water storage containters that we change out every 6 months.

Along with that, we keep a box with ready to eat canned meats, veggies and fruits (make sure you have a can opener), a jar of peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, trail mix, beef jerkey, food for our animals, and some cookies...I change these items out every year.

Then we have a first-aid kit that includes all kinds of stuff from bandaids, sterile gauze pads, soap, gloves, antiseptic, scissors, needles, tweezers, pain relievers, tums, pepcid and pepto bismol.

In one other box I have blankets, tennis shoes, sweatshirts, flashlights, batteries, radio, toilet paper, and some basic tools, rope, bungee cords, etc.

And I keep a stash of money too....you never know!

  • Wow, Mindy is very prepared.  I have some of what she listed, which makes me rethink that I better stock up in case.

The money thing is a MUST.  I remembered during the Northridge quake that the stores near me only took cash since there was no power for credit card transactions and such.

  • DH grew up in San Fran and is a very safety conscious person, but we do not have a safety kit, per say. ?I know where everything in the house is (and we have a good stock of first aid, blankets, flashlights, candles...etc) and we almost always have bottled water on hand, so I am not worried.

  • I have one for home and one for work and car.

  • I've had an earthquake backpack in my car since I moved to LA a few years ago. It has granola bars, water, flashlight, cash, jeans, tennis shoes, map, etc.

My boss told me after the Northridge quake she was in high heels and the freeway was shut down and had to walk miles and miles and has always since then kept extra shoes in her car.
