We sailed NCL and were on the Gem. We all loved it and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wanted to do a European cruise.
I will say that if you really want to feel like part of the culture, a cruise may not be the best bet. I enjoyed our Spain part of the trip where were got to really enjoy each place we were in. On the cruise, things felt pretty rushed since we only had about 6 hours in each place after travel time from the ship.
However, since we did such a long vacation, the cruise was a welcome relaxation from running around Spain (we saw 5 cities in 9 days!).
