Can I store these bulbs? And how?
I'm moving in less than 2 weeks. I have some gorgeous irises, daffodils and calla lilies in my back yard and I'd like to take some with me. They desperately need to be divided this year anyway. Thing is, we're moving in with my parents temporarily until we figure out where we want to buy. Could be months. How would I store these bulbs? Or can I? Not sure if it helps any, but I'm in Texas, so it's hot hot hot.
Re: Can I store these bulbs? And how?
if you have pets just be careful about where you store them. my cat got into some tulips and we had to take him to the emergency vet. he threw up for days and would not eat. they had to give him an IV and then he was fine. ?
Carrie! Bless your cat's little heart. That is an excellent point. That's the very reason I don't have potted plants indoors. My cat would eat all of them.
OP - be sure to store the bulbs on a shelf out of the reach of kids and pets!
No - if they are in full bloom right now, you can't dig them up and bag them. After they bloom and are still green, the leaves store energy for the next growing season. You can't dig them up until the leaves begin to yellow and the foliage dies back. I didn't realize they were still in bloom right now! I was thinking you were talking about daffodils or tulips because by now (if you are in the South) those would have already died back.
What kind of plants do you have?
If your daffodils are done blooming and the foliage has died back, you can dig them up and save the bulbs; a paper bag in a cool, dry place, as mentioned in pp is fine. You can store them a long time this way.
I don't know much about calla lilies, but I do know that irises have to be divided in the fall.
Hmm...
Yeah, the daffodils are almost dead so those I'm not too worried about. I'll just bad them as suggested in this post. It's mainly the irisies and callas i worry about killing. I may just dig some up transplant them to pots, hoping that they survive. Digging them up later isn't an option since we're moving in less than 2 weeks away from this house. We didn't know we were selling or I'd have done it in the fall! oh well. I guess it's better to try and fail than not try at all! Thanks for the tips ladies!
