How's this for a question of the day...?

If you could enforce one rule of etiquette, what would it be?

This isn't really just ONE rule....but in general...I would love to enforce good table manners! Seems like people have just gone willy nilly on bad usage of utensils (such as a knife to cut your steak), leaning all up on the table, using fingers instead of utensils, blowing their nose at the table, talking with food in their mouth..etc, etc. My mom was a B*TCH about making sure I behaved at the table and it's the one thing I'm glad she did enforce!

  • without a doubt, mine would be (will be!): always say thank you.

I feel as though appreciation/thankfulness for what we have and for what others do for us is paramount to happiness. I tease my mom about being a thank you note freak but I'm glad that she's instilled in me how important it is to thank people and express appreciation for even the smallest of things.  Its thoughtful, polite, and good practice of getting outside of our own heads and really recognizing what people are doing all around us. Not a day goes by in which I dont feel thankful for what I have and for the wonderful people I have around me and I know its a big part of leading a happy and fullfilling life.

Can you tell this is a big pet peeve of mine?! lol. It just drives me crazy when people have so much to be thankful for and they do nothing but focus on what they dont have.

  • I think mine might be cell phone etiquette.

Now that cell phones are basically the center of our lives, people just toss their manners out the window.  Talking LOUDLY for a LONG time on the bus or subway, texting/taking calls while spending time or having a conversation in person with someone else, not turning off the cellphone during movies/theater/meetings/etc - this stuff drives me nuts!

Tough to pick just one.  But I ditto this.

  • The one rule I consistently enforce with my daughter is DON'T BE RUDE.  This applies to anything and everything.  It keeps her from asking the man with a glass eye what happened to his eye, it keeps her from chewing with her mouth open, it keeps her from running around crazy in stores, it keeps her from interrupting conversations.

It's hard to explain to her exactly what rude means but I give examples and she seems to understand.  I do the "how would you feel if that were you" scenario to let her see how being rude affects people.

  • Ditto to the saying thank you...(this from the girl who has yet to send her wedding thank yous...hangs head in shame)

oh and also- people need to pick up their dog poo...

  • No cutting fingernails in public places!! I haven't yet figured out who it is, but someone on my staff clips their fingernails in their cubicle. That is the most grating sound to me. I mean, how hard would it be to take it to the restroom?!

  • Handshakes!

For me, handshakes tell a lot about a person...don't hand me a "limp fish." (The words "limp fish" are taken from a woman I consider EXTREMELY wise.)
