Frustrated with this whole weight loss thing... - rant

I know i'm constantly posting about weight updates.
My scale definitely is going to the trash. I tried weighing same time everyday. But being digital isn't the problem, the fact it flashes dashes before telling you what you weigh stinks and the fact it says I gained like 8 pounds after a day really isn't selling me on the fact that it's okay.
So there goes the scale.
DH and I figured, why not measure, it's probably a bit more accurate anyway. Yeah until I go to the store to buy some new shorts *now i'm stoked, ready to see if after a month I lost a size or something* size 15! A.R.E...Y.O.U...S.E.R.I.O.U.S?!* I'm only (barely) 5'4" and don't carry it well*  ...to make that news worse we get to check out and my shorts don't have a tag....grrreeeeaaaatttt. So the woman calls back to the juniors to get a price check, all the while the line got long behind us and hmmm all skinny gorgeous women and to add salt to the wound of the size 15...the cashier said out loud "they're a size 15" and I happened to catch out the corner of my eye the one woman and her boyfriend(?) 's eyes nearly pop out of their head.
I ignored them, but I was more upset with me.
How I'm a size 15. After a month of diet and exercise? I was a size 13.
I know you can't see changes right away but I feel like I am going nowhere.
What makes matters worse, I was going to up my workout to start the new month.
Stepper definitely is having issues and refuses to work.

Gah I need some good luck on this, and soon.

Thanks for listening*reading*

  • I hate "Juniors" clothing for the exact reason above - they make you feel huge.  I am usually a size 4, 6 or 8 (depending on the store) for pants and when I try Juniors stuff, it's always a size 9 or more...I think it's the way they are cut.  Younger girls don't have hips yet and I certainly do!

Try switching to women's or misses sizes for pants...you might find that you are smaller with them and get the weight loss confidence boost you need.

  • Letting the size of your clothes dictate how you feel about your efforts is the worst thing you can do. Especially in the juniors section!

The juniors section sizes are for pre-pubescent bodies, for sure. Those sizes rarely fit women who've passed the age of 17. Either that, or they're those thin women who never got hips/thighs/butt/whatever, and that's not the "standard woman" in my opinion.

I highly suggest you head over to the Misses section of your store and try on some clothes. Then go to a few other stores, and see how much it varies. I vary between a size 8 and a size 12, depending on where the heck I'm shopping!

Use measurement, use a good accurate scale, and keep working at it.

  • Weigh yourself once per week at the same time.

Don't go by sizes - even in the same store they're never the same because of mass production. I feel your pain though. The biggest indicator I went by was how my current clothes were fitting.

  • try not to get discouraged! If you feel like you are not making progress in another month or so, maybe you need to change your diet or program. ?Weight watchers was a great way for me to lose weight, i lost 30 pounds pretty easily with them. ?I paid the 10 week committment and then I was in my goal range luckily and then only had to pay for 6 more weeks of maintainence. ?Money well spent! ?Also make sure that you are getting lots of cardio in! ?Thats what really helps trim you down! ?Good luck! ?And keep working hard!
  • I agree, just try weighing once a week at the same time of day and keeping up with your good routine of exercise and eating better.  I never go by size of clothes because I swear stuff never fits me the same.

  • I'm sorry you feel so frustrated.  I'm sure it is tough when you aren't seeing the results you want.  I agree with all pp, don't let the size upset you.  Before I was pregnant, I was a mix of size 6, 8, or 10 depending on the design and store.

May I suggest the gestational diabetes diet???  I just got diagnosed with gestational diabetes last week and met with my counselor for my diet plan.  I've only been doing this a week and I lost 2 lbs. already...AND I'm pregnant!  I should be GAINING weight.  My doctor said it is completely normal to lose weight on this diet and to lose it pretty quickly.  I've also been told by my diabetic counselor AND doctor that the GD diet is really the diet that all people should follow to be healthy and to lose unnecessary weight. Here is what I have to do....

Breakfast: 30g of carbs (no fruit and no fruit juices)

    Mid morning snack: 15g carbs

    Lunch: 45g of carbs

    Mid afternoon snack: 15g carbs

    Dinner: 45g carbs

    Evening snack: 15 carbs

The key is to spreading out the carbs throughout the day and to eating some type of protein with every meal/snack.  It really isn't hard to do at all and I'm feeling great so far.  The other key is to go on a 10-20 minute walk after each meal (if you can).  I take one after breakfast and one after dinner and I'm feeling very healthy.  Not only is it healthy for me but my baby too.  I plan to keep this diet once I have the baby and my GD goes away however I can slip in those occassional sweet treats from time to time.

Good luck!!! Don't give up!! :)

  • Don't go by the size of the clothing, and I agree espically not in the Juniors section. Clothing really does vary from store to store and sometimes even piece to piece.

I've been feeling the same way recently, that I'm working out but not loosing the weight. I try to think of the bigger picture--overall health and the way I feel.

Moorenoles--I was reading you eating plan and I am not understanding what you mean by the grams of carbs. I am looking to change up my eating plan to try to get a little more results and if its easy I'm all for it. Would you be able to post what you typically eat at each meal to fall into those carbs?

Ugh! Losing weight stinks. I gained a TON of weight in grad school but managed to lose every single pound before getting pregnant. A month after giving birth...it's back to losing weight again!

I know how frustrating clothes shopping can be....but really a size 15 in juniors could be like a size 10 in "real" people clothes. I remember someone told me one time that juniors clothes are sized like that to make little girls feel better abouth themselves. Unfortunatley it has an adverse affect on the rest of the world!

I agree with PP that weighing yourself once a day will only make you crazy, even if you weigh yourself first thing in the morning, Our weight fluctuates a lot from day to day. 2lbs one day could simply be water retention from eating a really salty meal.

Don't beat yourself up. It sounds like your working hard to be healthy and really that's all that matters.

If you are looking for something new, I am a huge fan of WW and have had great success. It's not a diet, just a way to help you eat healthy.

Good luck and again...don't beat yourself up over it.

Oh, and in response to the girl who made a face over the "size 15"...don't worry about that either. People who do things like that probably have eating disorders to stay skinny and have containers full of vomit hidden in their closets. Don't be like that!!!!!!!!

  • Definitely try not to be frustrated.  I find its usually pretty normal for people to workout a month expecting to see dramatic differences and it doesn't work that way.  Most people start seeing results after about 4-6 weeks depending on the individual.

You definitely should not be weighing yourself every day.  You'll make yourself nuts.  Once a week at a consistent time of day is plenty.

It takes 3500 calories to eqaul 1 pound.  That means to lose 1 pound a week you would have to either eat 500 less x 7 days or burn 500 calories x 7 days or a combination of the two.

As a trainer I am a big fan of Weight Watchers.  It has a nice balance and its not a restrictive diet.  I've had clients do really well on it when they do the tracking/log and/or go to the regular meetings.  You need to find a healthy way to eat for your life that includes a good balance of fruits, veggies, and lean proteins.

In terms of exercise my advice is to vary your workout as much as possible.  Vary the type, duration, and intensity each day so you're not always doing the same workout.  Your body learns and gets accustomed to it.  Cardio workouts need to be a minimum of 10 minutes per session to have a good impact.

This is kind of like a puzzle...you have to determine what works and fits for you personally because what works for one person doesn't work for everyone.

    Hang in there!!

  • Thank you all for your suggestions and support.

I've come to the conclusion I'll not worry about those sizes. A relative of DH's told me she was a size 12 and just looking you can tell she's bigger than me... DH even told me to stop with the comparisons, that I'm not fat, at least I'm doing something about it and that I definitely wasn't bigger than that relative.
I know it's kind of not nice, but DH tells it like it is, I make him too otherwise it's an argument for him humoring me lol.

Anyway I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to try different things. I've tried at least 10 minutes of cardio today and lasted a minute longer than that goal so I was happy about that.
I'll just tweak things here and there.....eventually I'll see results.
I just have to force myself to realize it took me 3 months *give or take* to reach my size 5-7 in high school and that's because we had to do gym class.  And it didn't hurt I was a cheerleader and in color guard....those were workouts in their own.
