Another B-pics question..

I'm sure you'll all be sick of me asking questions about this by the time I'm done, but I need you guys! I haven't told anyone I'm doing them because I want to totally surprise DH. Hence, it's easier to just keep my mouth shut and ask you ladies for ideas.

So, I posted on my local to find a good makeup artist in the twin cities, as I live a few hours from there and no one around here really does b-pics. I found someone who seems good. Her website also has good pics. However, now my photog sent me a recommendation of her favorite make up artisit who does lots of b-pics. I guess I'd like to go with my photogs recommendation. But, she charges $65 and requires you to bring your own new tube of mascara and your own foundation. (I guess she charges $100 for her normal sessions and usually does models and even some actresses.) The previous gal I found only charges $30 and provides everything. She seems more down-to-earth too, like she will give me what I want instead of just doing what I "should" want for a boudoir session.

What should I do? I'm mainly thinking that the more expensive lady "must" be better and I should go for it, but is that really going to be true? Also, I'm trying to stay on a budget so the cheaper gal is tempting. Thoughts?

Re: Another B-pics question..

  • If you think the cheaper one is good then I would just go with her.  Paying more doesn't necessarily mean better.  I'm sure we all found this out in some way or another with our wedding planning :)

By the way I'm sure your pics are going to turn out great!  I'm thinking of doing it as an anniversary gift.

  • Michelle  - thank you for the vote of confidence! I'm doing them as a b-day gift for DH, but I am 10000% nervous. I think half the problem with this makeup thing is I did my own make-up for the wedding. I've never had my make-up professionally done and I just don't know what to expect. For the wedding, I really wanted to look like "myself" so I spent a lot of time just doing my regular makeup better than normal. I was happy with it, but for these pics I feel like half the fun is letting him see you in a different light than normal.  You are 100% right on the fact that more expensive isn't always better... I guess I forget all too quickly what I learned during wedding planning!

  • My thoughts are that you should go with who you are more comfortable with. How long do you have before you are doing this shoot? Maybe you could continue to search around. Maybe you could print some pictures of what you want your makeup to look like and show the cheaper make up artist that way she has a general idea of what you want your make up to look like. Or, you could ask your photog if she has any other recs...maybe you could thank her for the 1st rec but it was alittle out of your price range, does she have any one else that she recommends?

  • Ok seriously you will look hot but I totally understand how you are nervous, I would be too!  I think everyone who has done them says how great it was after they got into it.  Especially if you have a photog who does this alot I'm sure it will be great.  I would get my makeup done too though and go for a super sexy look.  I'm sure your DH will love them.  I know mine would be happy to see me in something besides a t-shirt.  I don't think i've pulled out the lingerie since the HM, nice wife I am :)
  • I would say cheaper don't always = less quality.

I'd go with whoever you feel most comfortable with. I'd also look at lots of their past work to see if I like one stylist's work better.

  • I agree with the rest of the ladies. if you think the cheaper woman does a good job then go with her.?

you do want the make up to be different than your usual look. Redder lips and smokier eyes. I'm sure both would do a great job, and if the cheaper one has looks that you like, then go with her. Talk to her about your ideas, maybe select a few of her pics from her site that you want the same look of.

    ?

do you have a close girl friend you can bring with you that you would feel comfortable with? that might help ease your nerves. I went alone since I didn't know anyone here who could come with, but between the 2 photographers and the make up artist, it was a lot of fun. my photographers actually suggest on their website that you bring a few friends and kind of make a party of it (if it would relax you a bit to be around your friends). If not, would having a drink before hand relax you a bit? just a glass of wine or champagne? not too much since you would have to drive home after..?

  • Lisa, I agree with everyone else.  I think that cheaper could be a good thing especially if they were recommended on your local!! I would however take your own mascara with you.  You dont' want her to be using her own mascara unless she has throw away applicators, that's very unsanitary because soo many germs and stuff can get passed around you know!!! That's the only thing i was going to say!!! I know your b-pics will be fantastic and you'll be georgous in them!!!! You better show us some teasers too when you get them back!!! :)
  • Megan - you are right about the mascara. I'll make sure to ask her about whether she has new brushes each time or if I should just bring my own. (I guess a good excuse to buy new.)

I appreciate all the feedback. I don't really have any friends to bring with, as it's during the workday, but I think everything will go okay. I hope it's fun, but even more so, I just HOPE that DH is excited and doesn't say, you spent how much money????
