Wife2DJ

hi!  I just saw your post from last week...I'm catching up on all my South Florida nesting!

Girl, I know EXACTLY how you feel .  I don't know if you're also hispanic but my mom put out all the stops to try and get me to stay in Miami.  Full fledged hispanic catholic guilt - it almost worked.  I was so sad about leaving and I'm sure you remember me posting last year about how hard it was to live here in Austin at first.  Now its been almost a year and I don't regret moving for one second.  My mom would cry on the phone, etc, at first but since she's visited me here and saw how great my life is and how happy I am, she has come to accept my decision and be happy for me.

I agree that Miami (or Broward - where my parents live) is not the ideal place to raise children and its difficult to come to that realization until you see what the rest of the country is like.  Here, kids all go to public schools - nobody needs to send their kids to private school because the education system is excellent.  Parents are super involved in their kids lives.  Everyone is active and healthy with normal extracurricular activities - not the crazy kind of activities everyone participates in down in Miami.  In fact, parents here seem to be shocked if the kids do any type of drugs.  I was like "well...in Miami..."  people looked at me like I was crazy.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you all of that because I went through that when I moved and it was extremely difficult but ultimately you have to do what's good for you and YOUR family.

Re: Wife2DJ

  • Thank you so much. I am so glad to see that your mom is happy for you know. I think my mom is starting to come around, and since we will prob move in with them before we move I will be able to squeeze in lots of quality time. I have told her that for our kids it is the best decision to raise them somewhere calmer. Glad you are enjoying Austin
