Dh took his car in for inspection today...no big deal, right?
WRONG!
I about fell out of my chair at work when I saw the $900+ transaction show up online from the car shop. I immediately called DH and he said some words about this/that part needed replaced and what not, but I was too stunned to take it all in.
I know it's not a new car (it's a 95 VW Jetta) but I wouldn't have expected that much to be needed for repairs, just to pass inspection. My Jetta (a 98) was in for inspection in March and it didn't need a single thing!
Now we're back to square-one with our finances...just when you think you're going to get ahead *BOOM* there's an unexpected bill to ruin all your hard work. I've been so diligent about our spending and trying to not use our credit cards and get them paid off, but this sure is going to make it difficult.
Sorry if I'm rambling...I'm just upset. Thanks for listening (reading) ladies! I really appreciate our forum so we can boost each other up emotionally when we need it.
Thanks...
Re: $900 later...
I'm sorry! I'm right there with you- had to fork over $700 to get my radiator replaced a few weeks ago. I was not happy.
Good luck overcoming this setback- I'm sure you can do it, but what a bummer.
That was one of the things that needed replaced, DH was telling me more about it last night. Thankfully, the mechanic is a friend of ours, because DH said he cut us a huge deal on the labor (like half price). The one other part that needed replaced took 4 hours to fix, because you have to put the car on the lift and all but tear it completely apart to get to it. It was something with the steering, I believe.
Of course then my SIL heard about our car stuff and was saying "you should have had FI fix your car...he would have been cheaper..blah blah blah"
Uh, no, he's not cheaper (he tried to get a "deal" on a part before from the shop he worked at, and DH actually found it cheaper himself from the website we normally order parts from) Plus, it needed inspected and repaired yesterday, not 2 weekends from now when he *might* have had time.
It sounds like you got a good deal then! And I don't know how far away your SIL lives, but you wouldn't want to drive any real distance with a leaking radiator. Without engine coolant, the car would overheat, which is very bad. I figured out that I had a problem because the fan started kicking on all the time, and then I saw my coolant well was empty.
From what I read (and asked my mechanic), radiator cracks have no rhyme or reason to them. It's not necessarily related to age (my car is '03) or mileage (<50K) or anything. They just fail sometimes.
I sooo feel your pain. A similar thing happened with my car the other year... about the same amount as well. Apparently I needed all new tires and all new brakes....actually i think we were taken because the tires shouldn't have needed to all be replaced to pass.
Anyway, I can also relate about the finances. We would have everything figured out...Paycheck.. these bills.. this extra... yeah.. never seems to work out. Always something when you finally get a little cushion or think you're getting ahead.
