New Nestie here

Hey everyone. I'm new to the nest, and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Joanne (or Jo). I was born and raised on Long Island - north shore, Rocky Point - but moved to north east PA about 4 years ago (I definitely prefer living on LI). I try to stay as close to my roots on LI as I can; after all, my family is still there. My future hubby and I are planning on moving back to LI within the next 2 years or so. Right now, I just graduated from school, and will probably be starting a full-time job here in PA within the next month, and because of that, we would stick around for at least a year. Trust me, I've applied everywhere on LI (and even NYC and CT) with the hopes of getting a job so that we can move back as soon as we could, but I unfortunately haven't heard anything back from anyone - much to my surprise. So hello everyone, and hope everyone is doing good. I miss LI so much!!!

Re: New Nestie here

  • Hi Jo! I'm Jess & I live in Bellmore. Congrats on your graduation and upcoming wedding! I hope you have luck with a job soon. It took me 7 months to find my current job so I know it's tough out there. Just don't get discouraged!

I hope you get back to LI soon!

  • Hi Jess. Nice to meet you! Thanks!

What line of work do you do? I'm a sonographer. The funny thing is that there were a ton of job positions posted for Sonographers, but I haven't heard anything from LI. Fortunately, one of the hospitals I did a clinical rotation at here in PA called me to tell me there was a full-time position open, and they had me go in for an interview yesterday. I'm crossing my fingers. It's not on LI, but it would be a full-time job for now, and it will give us the opportunity to save for a house. The only thing is that if I do get this job, it really will be around 2 years for us to get back to LI - because I would want to stay at that job for a little while Sad I hear back from the job within 2 weeks. HOWEVER, Matt and I get married in a week, and then leave right for our honeymoon, so chances are, I won't find out until after we get back on June 18th! Oh, how suspensful that will be! We'll be in Jamaica for 10 days though, so I'll probably be distracted from the suspense Wink

I really do miss LI - but it's all good - we know we will get back there, we just don't know when.

  • I'm currently working in a bank. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of career I want to do but my job is good for now. I hope you get the job at the hospital! Smile

Jamaica for 10 days sounds awesome! Where are you staying?

We went to St. Lucia for our honeymoon last summer and it was amazing. I'd love to be back there right now. Paradise

  • Thanks. I'll let you know what happens with the job when I hear something. We're going to Sandals Jamaica. I believe it's called Sandals Royal Caribbean. We almost went to Sandals St. Lucia, but saw the room we booked at Royal Caribbean, and liked it much better. Did you go to Sandals St. Lucia for your honeymoon, or just go on your own?

We stayed at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian for our honeymoon. It was fabulous! Great food, peaceful beach, and beautiful scenery. It was so relaxing. We even lucked out on the weather because the week before we went, it rained non stop. When we were there, it rained one day for about 5 minutes and that was it! The rest of the time, it was sunny. Smile

You will love Sandals. If there is a spa at your resort, you should go get a couple's massage. DH & I did that and it was my first massage ever and I loved it. You should also take advantage of the snorkeling. DH & I went twice on our honeymoon and we loved it. So much fun!

You're going to have such a great time. I wish I could go back to Sandals. Maybe for an anniversary or something one year. Smile

Yea, we almost stayed at Sandals Grande St. Lucian, but we chose Royal Caribbean - either way, it'll be amazing! Our room is right on the beach - literally. We open the door, and there is sand and the water is right in front of us. I'm getting really excited. There is the Red Lane Spa at the RC, and I keep getting emails from Sandals offering us a chance to book a spa there - I think we'll do that. Massages are amazing Wink.

I also want to do the snorkeling, but I may be doing it solo. Matt has a fear (it's pretty much his only fear) of having a lot of water under him. A few years ago, he went to the Keys in Fl and was snorkeling with his younger brothers. They came face to face with a Baracuda that stared him right in the eyes, with it's nasty teeth showing. He refuses to do anything like that again. I told him he can wait on the boat while I have fun snorkeling :-) I hope we have good luck with the weather too!

I actually did get carsick on the way to the resort. You're right, the drive from the airport was so far. Plus the roads are all windy; going up & down mountains. I was so relieved once we got there.

There's actually helicopter service to & from the airport. We met a couple that was going to use it on the way back. I guess the drive there was too much for them & they didn't want to relive it.

  • Hi Bertsbride, nice to meet you. Congratulations on your new home! That's so exciting!

I didn't even look to see how far the ride is from the airport to the Royal Caribbean resort..Hmm, I have to look into that! I do know that we get complimentary shuttle service in some kind of limo from the airport to the resort, and vice versa, but I don't know how long the ride is.

That's awesome, January should be a nice time to go. You get married the day after my birthday Big Smile How are your wedding plans going? The time is going to fly by like you wouldn't believe!! Matt and I get married in 5 days, and the time just flew by - and we got engaged July 2007.

15 minutes is not bad. If you get sick, once you reach your resort & see how fabulous it is, you'll feel better. That's what happened to me. Smile

  • That's not bad, that you got all the big stuff out of the way. That was like me. We got engaged July 2007, had the reception/ceremony place booked in October 2007 and my gown bought in February 2008. Then everything kinda went on hold until March of this year - which is when I graduated. After that, it was crunch time for wedding planning. March/April is when I booked the photographer, DJ, Florist and Bakery (all in about 5 days time). I know what you mean about not having the time - all of my time was devoted to school, until I finally was done and could focus on the wedding planning. It couldn't have worked out more perfectly though - it was just enough time to get everything done. I don't think I would have been able to do both at the same time either, at least without going crazy!I

Jessie, how long were you car sick for? I hope it went away quick for you. I just checked the distance from the Sangster Int'l Arpt?to Sandals RC, and it's only 4 miles, so that shouldn't be too bad of a ride for us.

Thursday/Friday will probably be my last day on the Nest until we get back from our honeymoon! I'll have pictures when I'm back. If you guys or I don't get to post until after then, have a good next few weeks, and I'll talk to you guys soon! :-)

Pretty much the whole car ride there but once we got to the resort, I felt a lot better. Being in paradise made me feel better right away. 4 miles isn't bad at all, I'm sure your ride will be much better than ours.

Have a wonderful wedding day and have fun on your honeymoon!!! Can't wait to see pics! Smile

  • Hey, I'm back. The wedding was absolutely amazing (I wouldn't change a thing!), and Jamaica was absolutely awesome! It seriously was only a few minute drive to the resort - they dropped of people at Sandals Montego Bay first, then us at the Royal Caribbean. I'm glad we didn't stay at Montego Bay because the front of the resort was facing the airport, and the you would always hear the planes overhead. We heard them too at RC, but not as much. I do have to say, 10 days is a bit much. Matt and I were ready to go home after 7 days. I was homesick and missed the dogs, and I think Matt felt the same way. It was amazing though, and we want to book another vacation back there.

  • Oh yea, and PS - I didn't get the job that I went for the interview for Sad So Matt and I were bummed about that. I was able to pick up a lot of hours where I work per diem upstate NY because a girl is out on Maternity leave, but It's not full time, and no benefits. I'll just have to keep looking, maybe something will turn up on LI, and that's why I didn't get the job...

  • your back! glad to hear everything went well!! sorry to hear about the job.

    your dress was gorgeous!

  • Thanks! We had such an awesome time in Jamaica - It's so beautiful! (inside the resort, anyway Tongue Tied)

I'm just telling myself the job was not meant to be..and it really sucks, because I didn't get the job over someone who I graduated with (there were only 12 of us in our ultrasound class)...BUT, she already worked within the system, but in another department..sooo, I'm telling myself it's ok...

How is everything going with you!?

  • Oh yea, Bertosbride - I just saw a post that you closed on your house...Congrats!!! You should have gotten your keys by now, right? How is/was moving-in? Did you get to paint everything?
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • everything is going good! we closed may 29, got the keys june 10 and we moved last thursday. its a lot of work but very exciting. we took 4 days off from work to try and settle in. we still have a lot to unpack and more work to do on the house. slowly but surley lol

the only work that was able to be done in time for the move was the floors. we still have to paint and we found out that we have to resheetrock 2 of the bdrms. we started peeling wall paper off and found some moldy sheet rock under the windows in the master bdrm. luckily its old and not a current leak. the house has 2 bdrms on the first floor and 2 upstairs. we had new carpet put in the upstairs ones last week so we can stay up there while they work on the 2 downstairs bdrms.

    hows everything going with you?

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Hey..sorry I haven't been on here for a while..I've picked up a lot of hours at work, so I've been busy...I'm glad to hear that you moved into the house! That sucks though that you have to re-sheetrock bedrooms! That is a pain in the rear - my hubby can do sheetrocking, and he absolutely hates it. I'm surprised the inspector didn't find the mold - that's an unwelcomed surprise! I'm sure by now, though, you guys have most of the work done on the house already. It is a slow process to get through though, especially when  you have work and things going on - very hectic!

Everything with me is going well. Still trying to find a job on good ol' LI. No success yet..I'm waiting to find out if a full-time position will be opening soon where I currently work in Binghamton. If it does, DH and will be moving there and staying around there for a little while. It wasn't in our original plans, but I love working there, and wouldn't mind being there for a couple years. I just applied to two places on Long Island (actually, 1 on LI and 1 in the Bronx), so we'll see how that goes. I know I have work until at least the end of August, but it's scary and overwhelming not knowing what will be happening work-wise within the next few months. It's even harder because Matt lost his job (right before the wedding), so it's even more stressful. We're paying an arm and both legs for Cobra through his ex-employment, so something full time with benefits would be absolutely lovely right about now! lol..

I got my professional pictures back from the photographer - about 1000 of them! I get to keep all of the proofs (no markings), which are basically 4x6 photographs. It's too expensive to get albums through the photographer, so I'm going to be doing the albums myself - I love scrapbooking and that stuff anyway :-) They came out absolutely amazing, and I couldn't be happier!

I hope everything with the house is going well and smoothly. Any new wedding plans yet?
