Info for possible move to NV

H and I are looking into moving from AZ and I am interested in pay scale, job security, good/bad school districts(I'm an elementary teacher), cost of living, good areas to live, places to avoid. :) TIA!

I know about the Las Vegas area, but can't help you with other parts of Nevada (Northern/Reno, etc).  I can't tell you about the good school districts and the bad because I don't have kids and I have no clue.

Some of the nicer places to live are Summerlin, Southern Highlands, Desert Shores, the Lakes, Mountain's Edge, Henderson, Green Valley, Rhodes Ranch.  Here are some zip codes that I know off the tip of my head to help you with your search.  Others can help with the Summerlin area since I am not as familiar with those zip codes.

    89074 (Henderson/Green Valley)

    89052 (Henderson/Green Valley)

    89123 (Silverado Ranch/Green Valley)

    89141 (Southern Highlands)

    89178/89179 (Mountain's Edge)

    89139 (I think) (Rhodes Ranch)

A lot of people don't care for North Las Vegas, but I wouldn't know because even though I've lived here for 11 years, I have only been to NLV twice.  I don't know anywhere who lives in that part of town either, so I can't say if it's good or bad.

Cost of living is great right now.  Now is the best time to buy a house, according to all of the real estate gurus.  I've heard teachers don't make a ton anywhere, so I'm sure Nevada is no exception.  There are some teachers on this board, so I'm sure if you do a post re: questions for teachers, you may get more responses.  This is a good bunch of girls, but we aren't as active as we used to be in our knot days.  It may take a few days to get a response.

  • Hi!  I also can only tell you about Vegas.  I teach second grade here.  All of Vegas is one school district - Clark County (ccsd).  I teach in the Northwest and love it.  Here's a link to the pay scale  http://ccsd.net/jobs/LLPsalary.htm

There is a ton of new construction going on around here.  Master planned communities you might want to look into in the NW area are Providence and Summerlin.  I would avoid North Las Vegas (not to be confused with northern Las Vegas)  as it's old and pretty run down.  Certain places in the northeast aren't very nice either.  I wish I could be as helpful as m+j with area codes and stuff, but I'm not that cool.  :)

  • Well, first of all, are you sure? I moved here almost 2 years ago from the SF Bay area and don't recommend it. It is not terrible, but it is not a great place to live. I would say that if you are into clubbing and other nightlife pursuits, there is a lot of that here.

That said, if you are certain about moving here, I recommend the West Side or Henderson. I live in the NW and it is nice here. Takes forever and a day to get to "civilization" but that is changing as it becomes more developed here. Mountain's Edge is nice but also very remote. It is a posh area.

When I drive around, I notice that I really like the Boca Park area (Charleston & Ft. Apache) and love Green Valley (Henderson area). Hope this helps.

There is a lot to do in Silverado Ranch, but it also seems very remote. Maybe it is just me.

  • NV, particularly Vegas is not somewhere that I plan to spend the rest of my life. Not because I hate it here, but because I moved from Phoenix (I was born there) to here and I'm ready for a different landscape/climate. However, the housing market is great and all of the areas that m+j suggested to you are great areas. I'm going to UNLV to become a secondary education teacher and the starting pay in Nevada is on the low side compared to other states. That being said, I'm not sure how it compares versus the cost of living to other states. For example, the starting teacher pay in New York City is higher, but the cost of living is extremely higher than here.
  • I live in NE Nevada, specifically Elko.  Elko is a small town, but it's about 3.5 hours from Salt Lake City, 3 from Boise and 4.5 from Reno.  It's a nice enough town, but we only plan to be here for 5-7 years.  It's a railroad and ranching town that turned into a gold mining town.  There's several elementary schools, but from what I understand, the schools are good.   I think that as long as the mines are active, the town will continue to grow.  The only part of town I would maybe avoid would be the south side, but I'm not even sure that it's that bad.  Elko is a pretty great little town, if you don't mind the remoteness.

There's so much to do outside around the area with the public lands, hiking areas, 4-wheel drive trails, and South Fork Reservoir.  The area has a rich history and is known as the "last cowboy town in the west."  Each Feb there is a cowboy poetry festival.  In the summer, the Basque festival has a running of the bulls, and there's a motorycle jamboree and rodeo.  You can see mountains to the north, mountains to the south, and the town is at about 5000 ft above sea level.  We got about 4 feet of snow last winter in town.

I doubt you're looking to relocate to Elko, but if you are, it's a great place to live.

  • I have lived in Las Vegas for my whole life. Not that long but 20 years. I just bought a house in the Silverado Ranch area. Most of Henderson is a great area to live in. North Las Vegas is a little scary. I do not have any info on how much teachers are paid I know that it is not that much but there is always a need for teachers here. Buying a house right now is really good. Prices are really good. Other area's of Nevada I have never lived in but my husband is from a small town in NV. If you like the small town thing then you  might want to look into that. There is lots to do other than the Strip. Just a question though what does your husband do?
