Where to buy furniture?

Where have you ladies bought furniture? Were you happy with your purchases? DH and I are moving from our one bedroom apartment into a three bedroom home, so we're going to need to buy a good deal of furniture. We checked out Raymour and Flannigan, and found their stuff to be over-sized and over-priced. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Where to buy furniture?

  • Room & Board, IKEA, Craigslist.  They are like the trinity of furniture for us.
  • Congratulations on your house purchase...that's wonderful! I'm sorry I'm not a help in the furniture purchasing dept. tho'...I got my couch from R&F.

  • Thanks Bonnie! :)

Craigslist is definitely on my list of options. I think I'm going to check out some second hand furniture stores as well.  But I don't think I want to go second hand for a couch or anything upholstered, the thought skeeves me a little.

That would skeeve me out as well.  I think our co-op has a rule against bringing in "used" mattresses and upholstered furniture.

  • I don't know where you live but there is a wonderful little furniture store on Court St. in Carroll Gardens call Home Court Furniture.  They have a small showroom but lots that they sell from a catalog.  The gentlemen who own it are really knowledgeable and friendly and they have great prices.  If you don't live near there, I think it's worth the trip.

  • And we're downsizing, so you can take our stuff! Smile

I was going to suggest Craigs List (where we'll be listing some of our stuff) and also Ikea, as have been recommended already.

  • I have a couch from Crate and Barrel that I love.  We have gotten things from C&B and Pottery Barn.  Boring, but there you go.

We also just moved from a 1BR apt into a 3Br house.  The only furniture we've gotten since the moving is dining room furniture and it was from a local place (Central Ave in Hartsdale).
  • The bedroom set we just bought from Bob's is really good quality - it's just that their service sucks, but fortunately I care more about the furniture itself than the service.

I've also heard good things about Ashley Furniture somewhere in NJ.
