Today's Question: 6/4

So since my trip of doom is upon me, what is one (or a few) of the most ridiculous things your in laws have ever done?

Re: Today's Question: 6/4

  • Ohh I have a good one.

We had the reherseal dinner 2 nights before the wedding. Saturday was down time. So my IL's inivted my parents, my sister, and us to a quiet dinner in the hotel. So we show up and they have invited ALL these other people, including a handful who were not even invited to the wedding (awkward much?)

They sat several tables away from us and did not talk to us nor my parents the entire night. Then, at the end of the night, the waiter approached my FIL with the bill and my FIL pointed to my dad and waved him over to my dad. So my dad got stuck with the $1200 dinner bill for all of us (my parents, sister, her friend, DH, me, and my IL plus 8-10 people my parents didn't know).

I was FURIOUS. My dad would never say anything, he is the most not-cheap person you will ever meet, but I thought it was so tacky and classless.

Given that my IL's didn't help us with the wedding financially at all, money was already a really sore topic for me at that time, so I nearly flipped out. I had to leave the table and collect myself in the lobby to avoid a bridezilla-like meltdown in public.

My MIL did a lot of annoying things prior to our wedding, even our wedding coordinator was like, "WOMAN, back the eff off, this is not the way this operates!" For example, our wedding was "her" day since her oldest son was getting married. She wanted to be escorted down the aisle by all 3 sons. I said no, that is stupid, and requires back and forth of my BILs. So she had this complete meltdown about why no one loves her and only the youngest BIL is walking her down the aisle.

They didn't want to contribute financially to our (expensive as it was) wedding yet they presented me with a guest list of over 40 people. Then she cried when I said we couldn't afford more than x amount of people and wondered why we hate her so much and why we don't want her to celebrate with all of her friends.

Then there was the night she said it was unfair that DH was getting married before my SIL (who is older) because my MIL "deserves" to be a MOB before the MOG.

Thank goodness she has chilled considerably since then. I look back and cannot believe she is even the same person she was back then.

  • Are you going to FL with your ILs?

My DH's parents are both deceased, but his brother (so my BIL-duh) is a real WACKADOO!  They are twins and I always tell DH that the reason his brother is 4 minutes older is because he annoyed DH and so DH kicked him out of the womb first.

BIL is so ridiculous, that it would take me forever to post about it.  I thank the Lord I ended up with the normal twin.

Yep, well we're meeting them there.  We're visiting dh's grandma who lives there.  MIL, FIL, and BIL will all be there.

Punky, my MIL did that kind of crazy stuff too around our wedding.  Though FIL would never ever stick my dad with a bil like that!!!

We had a destination wedding and MIL insisted it not be on a week where she had to do payroll at her job (She works for her brother) or on a week where BIL had school (he was a 21 year old college student who never went to class anyway.)

We wound up scheduling it for his spring break and I arranged with MIL's brother to make sure payroll was taken care of, but she totally went off the handle and just cried and cried about how I didn't want her to be there.  RIIIIIGHT.

    *rolls eyes*

Are you the first DIL? I am wondering if I was the "break in" for my BILs future wives or if she'll be just as bad with them.

  • Let's see mine

came over to see our new house and pointed out every defect and bragged about SIL's house being so much nicer.

The biggest rift for us is christmas. We decided to alternate holidays between families b/c mine is in Charleston in his in Greenville, by the time we drove to mine and then woke up super early to go to his we were beat and didn't really enjoy doing that the first yr, so we said never again. Wrong. She invites everyone over to my house to have an early or late christmas on the years we are with my family.  Even this year, I will have a new born and she said----that's ok we'll just all come over to your house this year.  This wouldn't be a problem if she didn't critique everything about me or my home. So now I have to 'entertain' this year w/ a very sore vagina----sorry venting here.

  • MIL has a tendancy of speaking before thinking - - said a couple things to hurt my feelings, but other than that - - nada. But it is early in the game!
  • I love my IL's, but there is one big thing they did that made me, DH, and my parents so mad.  I don't want to go into it because it's embarassing, but they (along with another couple) planned a really, really tacky party for DH and me and the other couple's daughter and her FI before we all got married.  The other couple and their daughter didn't think anything of it, and neither did the ILs, but I was mortified.

Dudette, tell everyone you are sorry but you cannot host, then lock.the.doors come party time.

Pretend like it's just missionaries from some crazy church trying to give you a pamphlet.  Lock the doors, close the blinds, and turn the heater/air conditioning off.  They'll think you're away :-P

  • Unfortunately, I don't have any wacky IL stories.  Both of my hubby's parents are deceased and he's an only child.

His aunts and uncles and cousins have been nothing but wonderful to me since I met them.  There is maybe one thing that was a little embarassing.  At our wedding we did a dance to determine which couple had been married the longest.  One of his uncles has been married to his aunt for 40-something years.  The DJ asked them if they had any advice for us.  His uncle gave a short little speech (obviously not prepared) and then said something to the effect of, "Lets hope it lasts this time."

I'm his 2nd wife, and his first had an affair and left him.  Regardless of the reason, it wasn't really appropriate to bring it up at our wedding.

That explains it. After several friends of mine have married first sons, I have come to the conclusion that mothers of sons go whackadoo during this time.

I was the MOH at a wedding last summer and her MIL FLIPPED OUT on her. She refused to walk down the aisle.  I sent a BM down to her to ask her to please come back because FIL was waiting to escort her and the bride wants to honor her with this. The MIL told the BM to F*** off and then stormed down the aisle back to the bride, pushed me aside, and went nose to nose with the bride, pointed her finger at her face and said, "I AM his MOTHER. I am not a peice of SH!T DO YOU HEAR ME!!" spun around and stomped back down the ailse. Everyone was stunned.

Bride started crying, I'm solely trying to get her to calm down, told FIL get just get to his wife and sit down, the groom and best man (his bro) are standing at the alter, wondering what is going on. OMG it was horrible.

The MIL just sat there during the ceremony, arms crossed, sunglasses on, staring off to the side. During dinner she started to say something to the bride again and I said, "YOU can just go sit down, we are all fine here." because I wasn't having her upset my friend again.

    What a nightmare.

  • WOW.   Mine are way tame compared to you guys.  My MIL is actually awesome.  FIL is ehhh.  Grandparents in law?  Boo.  Mainly I have to put up with racist and super political banter at family lunches.   It's just a little lame.

I guess my least favorite recent event was when DH got tipsy on a Saturday night and told his aunt that I was a Democrat (this is after wed been dating for 5 years).  The next day said aunt had lunch with the grandparents and the ILs and the topic came up.  According to MIL, the whole family got into a trash talking argument that ended with MIL telling everyone that I was "just kidding".  The topic has never been approached in my presence which I appreciate.   I might just flip my ***.

This sounds like my IL's too.  MIL's side.

FIL does stick up for me though.

That would break dh's heart, but very tempting.
