Where do you go on vacation?

We are moving to SD (La Jolla) on Oct 5th and are avid travelers.  We now live in NJ, 15 mins from NYC, with 3 major International airports offering flights to just about anywhere in the world. Looking at the SD airport site, it doesn't seem as if they have many airlines and many people mentioned they usually fly out of LAX. Is that true?  What are some common destinations that people from this area go to? I know where I am now, Europe is huge, as is Florida and just about anywhere in the Caribbean.  I know living location doesn't dictate where you travel, but I'm sure people from certain locations are more likely to go to places closer to where they are, especially if it's a quick trip. So if you're looking for a quick weekend getaway, what would you recommend? Leaving out of SD is much preferred over LA. Thanks!!

Re: Where do you go on vacation?

  • John Wayne International Airport in Orange County is a great option because it's closer than LAX, less crowded and has more flight options than San Diego. We have flown out of there for several trips, also used San Diego and LAX.

Living here hasn't impacted our travel plans. We took a non-stop to Maui from Orange County. Kauai out of LAX. Europe out of LAX. San Francisco is an easy flight from San Diego or Orange County.

Easy trips from this area are San Francisco/Napa, Seattle, Vegas, Colorado, dessert areas (Texas, New Mexico, drive to Arizona). And trips to resort areas in Mexico are popular options.

  • Aside from travelling to Mexico, if you want international you are better off driving to LAX and flying out of there.

You can do Cabo for a quick international weekend.  Domestically, you can weekend in LAX, SFO, DEN, PHX, LAS, etc.  For longer international trips, you are closer to Asia on the west coast and SFO had a TON of flights into China, Japan, etc.  Just be prepared for Europe prices to be a bit higher than the east coast since you will typically have to connect if you fly out of SAN.

As for the San Diego Airport.....I love it.  We are a final destination airport so we dont get all the damn traffic associated with being a hub for a major airline.  Our airport is smaller, easy to navigate, has ample parking, and its on the bay so its a beautiful city to fly into.

Most of my friends weekend in Vegas but they drive instead of fly.  Its faster to drive to Vegas than to fly, especially if you are flying Southwest.  You can be in Vegas in about 4-5 hrs and it takes about that long to fly there (drive to airport, check in, fly, land, etc)  SFO is also a good weekend destination and you can get super cheap airfare on Virgin America IF you book in advance.  They run $39 fares each way to SFO.

  • i love our airport as well.  so much smaller and less complicated then other more major airports (plus you can get there an hour before your flight and be fine).

we travel to Canada annually and just fly SD/Denver/Montreal or SD/Chicago/Montreal.  we just flew to St Lucia last year from SD, though I have to say it was a LONG trip.  to Paris we flew SD/San Francisco/Paris and that was greatl.  for our trip to Belize even though we flew out of LAX, we still had a layover in Houston.

from SD, anywhere in Central America is pretty quick and painless, as is Mexico.  i agree with the pp, Cabo is great quick getaway from here and you can't beat the 45 minute flight to Vegas, or the hour and 1/2 fight to SF.

  • Usually I like to go back to NJ/NYC on vacation, since I miss the city.  I don't mind flying out of the airport here, but I haven't done any really far trips, either.  We flew to Kauai from here, with one stop on Maui (I think) to change planes).  The strangest thing to get used to is the lack of non-stop flights out of San Diego.  The airlines all want us to fly to LAX or SFO before going anywhere else.    I've only been out of the country twice since I moved to SD and both times we flew out of LAX, but that's probably because the trips were arranged by The Price is Right and that's their closest airport.
