OUCH...Wisdom teeth!

Good morning!  I could really use some advice....my wisdom teeth have been coming in for about 4 years, and they've hurt off and on, but never as bad as the last couple days.  My dentist back in the U.P. did an x-ray last summer and said they didn't need to be removed then, but the way they're feeling now, I'm kind of wondering if maybe they need to come out.

1) Do you have any home remedies that you've used to reduce tooth pain?  (I'm going to go see a dentist, but I need something to make it feel better until I can get an appointment.)

2) Do you know of any good (and not terribly expensive) dentists in the area?

3) Have any of you ever had your wisdom teeth removed?  If so, would you mind sharing where you went and how much it cost?  I'm not sure if my health insurance will cover it, so I'm a little worried about the price if I need them removed.

4) Anything else you want to share about this (painful) subject?

Thanks!  I really appreciate anything you can tell me!

Re: OUCH...Wisdom teeth!

  • Sorry to say, there really are no home remedies to wisdom tooth pain.  I am a Reg. Dental Assistant on the south side of lansing.  Dr. Flewelling.  We do not do many wisdom tooth extractions.....we refer mostly to Dr. Meyrowitz at Lansing Oral Surgery.  They are located on South Cedar between I-96 and the Holiday in South.

The cost can vary.  Do you want to be sedated (knocked out)?  then it depends on each tooth.  Do you have all four?  Are they impacted?  Soft tissue?  Partial bone?  Full bone?

Is it just one side that is bothering you?  You could be experiencing pain from eruption (teething).  Or if it is partially erupted, you could have soft tissue irritation or even a gum infection.

Best advice is to keep the areas clean.  Then take motrin.......it is a pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory.  You can take up to 3200 mg a day.  Take it with food......yogurt coats the tummy well.  AND ....... see a dentist in the next souple of days.  If you by chance do have some type of infection, it can cause further problems if left untreated.

    Good luck!

  • I have all four.  They're all fully in.  A couple have a loose flap of skip over them.  Right now my top and bottom ones on my right side are hurting me and the other two are fine.  If I have to have them taken out I definately don't want to be awake for it.  I hate needles, but I hate the thought of being awake with someone pulling out my teeth more.  I'm definately going to try the Motrin.  Thanks!
  • You will need to have them removed immediately if they are causing you pain. Dr. Schoonover in Dewitt is excellent, but you will have to go to an oral surgeon's office to actually have them removed. Mid Michigan Oral Surgery is really good...I had one of mine removed by them. It's pretty expensive, but if you don't have it done it can cause nerve damage. I believe one tooth is about $300-400, that includes anesthesia to put you to sleep.

Try taking some motrin to help with the swelling, ice packs will also help. Don't take aspirin or drink alcohol, as they both thin your blood out. Sounds like you will be having surgery pretty soon, give them a call first thing in the AM and clear your schedule. I went to work the day after I had my tooth out, but if you are having all four out, you may what to give yourself plenty of time to heal. Remember, you will be on narcotics for the first few days to control the pain and you won't want to do much of anything.

    Good luck!

  • I forgot to mention ....eat soft foods!
  • I second Dr.Meyrowicz at Lansing Oral Surgery! I actually have gone to him twice; once for my wisdom teeth (all four extracted) and once last year to have one of my front teeth extracted following an accident at work. My husband also went there to have his wisdom teeth out.

I am not certain how much it cost because my insurance covered it both times, I would have to dig up statements to find out! But I know when I had my front tooth extracted last year my insurance didn't cover anesthesia so I had to pay about $395 for that.

To relieve the pain I would recommend ice and Motrin. Following the surgery I would recommend taking a few days off work, however I think each person is different. I took about 2 days to feel better however my husband was playing video games and chipping golf balls in the front yard about 5 hours after surgery. I was a little swollen but no bruising which was nice. Soft foods help a lot as well, stock up on JELLO, pudding, and mashed potatoes. You'll need to remember to have someone present to take you home following surgery since you are planning on sleeping (sleeping sounds better than "being put under") during the surgery.

I realize that this post is super long. So sorry, I have had a lot of work done on my mouth over the years so I have experience. haha! Good luck and I hope you feel better.

  • If they are all fully erupted, then the surgery may be a bit easier on you.  You may need marcotics the first 24 hours, but more often than not, motrin does a pretty good job as long as you keep taking it.  Most people are able to return to normal activities the next day.  Just plan on taking it easy the day of surgery.  To avoid getting a dry socket or infection following surgery:  avoid lying flat....rest/sleep propped up a bit for the first day, do not suck through a straw, avoid carbonated beverages, do not smoke.

  • I had three of them removed. I was awake (our insurance didn't cover it and I wasn't going to pay extra). They gave me shots and I was fine. It wasn't bad at all. I've never been 'knocked out' so I was nervous that I'd have a reaction to the anethesia (sp?) and make the entire process worse. The procedure doesn't take too long and I really think you could do it and be awake for it. Good luck!

  • I have to get all 4 of mine out soon. My dentist keeps bugging me about it, but I am super scared to do it. lol  It's funny, as I'm typing this the top and bottom on my left side are hurting me.  Maybe soon...? lol
  • I am definately scared too...I have a phobia of needles and I have never had anything done at the dentist besides routine cleaning and an exam.  I got a consultation appointment at 2pm tomorrow, so I'll let you know what happens with that.  It still hurts, but I've been taking Motrin and trying to eat foods that don't irritate it more.
  • If I were you, I'd listen to the other girls and get them taken out ASAP.  I got two of mine taken out last year at Dr. Mauro (something like that) in Lansing on Jolly and Pine Tree.  I still need to get the uppers done, but they haven't been bothering me at all *knocking on wood*.
  • The other thing: if you keep letting them come in they could push your teeth out of alignment and you'll end up with bite and jaw muscle issues.
