Milwauke schools/neighborhoods
Hi! I have a job interview this week at the Milwaukee Academy of Learning and Leadership. It's on West Center Street. Do you know anything about this school? Do you know anything about this neighborhood? I'm not familiar at all with Milwaukee and I'd greatly appreciate ANY feedback. Thanks!!

Re: Milwauke schools/neighborhoods
I work for the public school system but, honestly, haven't heard much about that school. It's a choice school, are you familiar with that? And I don't think they've been in existence too long. I'm almost positive that the school was created after the choice program started.
I will be honest with you that 15th and Center is in the heart of the central city. If you are not familiar with urban, high poverty areas it may be a shock to you. I don't work too far from there so I'm used to it and know how to keep myself safe.
I like working for the public school system. It's a larger district and the how you're treated varies greatly from school to school. There is a rather strong union so an individual school can't get away with too much.
The school you were talking about is a private school so it is a seperate entity. Would you ever consider working for the public school system? The population at that school would be nearly identical to the public schools because of the choice program.
not sure if i'd go back to teaching in a public school. although, i'm glad to hear there's a strong union. i've spent the last 6 years working with a severely emotionally disturbed population within a private specialized school. (my bruises are just beginning to heal!) i'm an instructional math coach, too, so i'm holding out hope for an opening.
