How did I get into this...??(lil' long...sorry!)

Sandy's sister is having a hard time financially because her hubby can't work (back injury ->surgeries, etc), she is only working at a convenience store and they have a son. They are living with her hubby's sister (who is NOT a good role model for their son) and have no room, no privacy and can't seem to get ahead.

She is 25ish and sent me her resume because I told Sandy I would help her spiff it up and I have some nice, professional clothes I could give her so she could apply for a better (REAL) job and start getting them in a better place. I told her I would give her a good reference, etc.

Well...I get her resume and oh my goodness..!!! She hasn't held any job on it for a full year except the store she's at now. The mispellings are all over the place. The grammar is bad. The "bullet points" about her duties are practically nonexistant. I think it may almost be the worst resume I have ever seen. And she's not stupid by any means. I think she just hasn't had to do anything "professional" as of yet and has no clue.

So I have a new project it would seem...clean up her resume....give her some training on the Microsoft Office suite so she can do basic office work and give her some professional wardrobe choices. They are in such a pickle, I really hope she gets something better and does a good job so they can get back into their own home again.

Conversely, I hope I am not going through all of this and she doesn't take it all seriously and they are right back where they are now....

Me and my big mouth..."Oh sure Sandy...I can help her with her resume...." hahahaha!

  • It's great you can help her out. Hopefully things turn around for them.

  • You're doing a very nice thing by helping her out!

  • That is great that you are doing this!

I offered to do the same thing for our neice a couple of years ago. I told her to send me her resume and she just had jobs (ie. babysitting/convenience store) listed on a piece of paper. No duties, no dates, no header, nothing. I told her to call me and we'd talk through each of her jobs so I could help her come up with duties/descriptions - but she never did. And now she is 24 and still umemployed. What can you do?

I hope your SIL does better at follow-up! :)

  • So I turned her info into a beautiful, professional resume. She asked if she could come over Sunday afternoon and let me give her a crash course on some office applications so she can be prepared. So it sounds like she's serious about wanting to improve and get a better job. I hope she's a fast learner!

Thanks to all for the comments. I don't really mind helping someone who wants to help themselves..you know that old adage about give a man a fish or teach a man to fish....

  • It's really nice of you to help her. I hope she finds something good soon.
  • I'm really glad she's taking your advice seriously and has a fab new resume. Do you still feel comfotable giving her a reference after seeing her resume?
  • Well if she can catch on to using the office applications pretty quickly, then I will give her a reference. I think she is ready to step up to the plate and I want to help her if so. Sometimes people just need to be given a little chance to turn things around. And while she may not have lots of experience, she's not stupid and I think she has potential. I will be able to tell more though once we do a little training on Sunday....

  • It's sweet of you to help her out!  Sounds like she could probably use some mock interview sessions, as well.  They're embarrasing (at least for me), but SO helpful.  GL!
