Not sure if I should take cat to the vet

We just moved in with my parents temporarily and they have 3 cats. Parents just left to go out of town for 2 weeks. My mom told me that one of the cats has been acting strange for the last two days. She's been moving really slowly, very inactive, her fur is a little duller. Just not her usual playful self. Last night she just sat in the chair for hours, which is unusual for her. She's still eating and drinking to our knowledge and as far as we know, her bowel stuff is all normal. My mom said not to worry with taking her to the vet, but I am not sure. Does this sound like something that would warrant a vet trip? Or should we wait a day or two and see if she starts to perk up?

I don't know if she really IS sick or if maybe it's just due to stress. We've been moving in for about a week and it's crazy in the house right now. Thoughts? I'm not sure what to do and honestly, we can't afford much in regards to vet bills right now... I know that sounds horrible....

I'm also concerned for their two other cats and our two cats. (Yeah, that's a lot of cats in the house, I know). Right now, they're all acting normal.

Thoughts? Go to the vet? Call the vet? Wait another day or two?

Re: Not sure if I should take cat to the vet

  • I'm one of those super-over protective cat moms. In this situation I would just call the vet and explain the entire situation (the moving in, you two being new, the two new cats in the house, etc.) as well as the medical worries. The vet (if it is a good one) will tell you either bring in the cat, or the cat is just adjusting, wait a few days and if no change bring it in
  • That's a lot of stress for one cat.  She's probably just flipping out (quietly) right now.  Give her a space of her own and let her adjust.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Thanks :) I'll just watch her for a day and if she's still acting funny in the morning, I'll call the vet and see what s/he suggests.

I'm an overprotective cat mom too and if this were my cat, I'd have already called! Since it's my mom's cat and I've not been around her as much, I don't "know" her as well. My mom doesn't seem overly concerned, but I think maybe that's just because SHE (mom) was stressed with us moving in and them trying to leave town and several other things and didn't want to think about one more thing right now.
