Post on Travel board got me thinking...

I made a post on the travel board for someone who was looking for somewhere to vacation within driving distance of Charlotte.  I recommended Charleston over Myrtle Beach and said that I, and many Carolinians, felt that Myrtle Beach was the armpit of the state.

Maybe it's because I'm from the Upstate, but I've just never liked Myrtle Beach.  It's always just seemed dirty to me, at least in comparison to Charleston.

Another girl posted saying that she always thought Greenville/Spartanburg ws the armpit of SC due to the factories and that Charleston had too many Yankees (clearly, she hasn't been to MB lately and seen all the snowbirds).

So my question to all of you...which city/area is the armpit of SC and why?

Re: Post on Travel board got me thinking...

  • Columbia...because that's where all the Gamecocks are!

Seriously, Myrtle Beach proper is pretty trashy.  I like Garden City and Surfside on the south end and North Myrtle Beach (those are the areas we visit), but we never venture into Myrtle Beach.  Some of the lower parts of the state (I-95 corridor) are pretty run-down and poverty-stricken, and areas that need a lot of help.

I also agree with you on the Yankees thing- Charleston is pretty southern, but when you're in the Myrtle Beach, you see a bunch of northern license plates (especially Ohio!).

  • I like Chas and Greenville over Columbia. I've never been to MB---b/c I've been told not to bother.

  • I will with MB being  the armpit. SC and NC have so any other BETTER beaches (Ocean Isle, Sunset beach, Garden City, Edisto, Charleston, Isle of Palms ect...) why would anyone even WANT to go to MB anymore? It's basically a teen hangout spot where its easiest to get laid, alcohol and drugs.

I don't think upstate is the armpit at all. I find Greenville to be very nice and beautiful (in most places)

  • It's funny I always refer to the armpit as the hottest place ever, which would be Columbia. The land there is lower and there isn't great breezes like the beaches give us on the coast.

But as far as trashy...I don't know. Now that I think about it I haven't vacationed for over a week in MB since my junior year in high school...but it was fun then, at 16 Big Smile

I'm living in Columbia and I have to say that it's a close second.  It always feels like Columbia is 10 degrees hotter than anywhere else on the planet.  I think MB takes the cake, though, for being an STD Mecca (there was some statistic that came out when I was in college that led me to that opinion).  My grandmother lives in Murrells Inlet, which is ok, but its proximity to MB makes me avoid it, too.

  • Definitely MB.  I always feel a pang of hurt when someone I meet says "yeah, I've been to SC.... we vacation in MB!".   I always waver between telling them that MB isn't really SC and wanting to run far away from them because that's what they consider fun :)

  • I live in Columbia now, but am originally from the Myrtle Beach area. While I will agree that parts of it are very trashy, some of the surrounding areas aren't so bad! Murrells Inlet and Pawley's Island have a lot of charm and character! And I will also say that there is a lot more to do in Myrtle Beach than there is in Columbia-- shopping, shows, nightlife! If you can handle all the "snow birds" and trash which consume some parts, Myrtle Beach really isn't all that bad!

But I also do think Charleston is a beautiful city and can see why others would prefer it! Since I live in Columbia now, and have for the past 7 years, it's starting to feel like home, but I personally find Columbia and the upstate boring compared to the coastal cities. Maybe I'm just a beach girl at heart...

  • I've always referred to Myrtle Beach as the Armpit of SC...and Columbia as something much more stinky!

I've noticed as a whole Myrtle Beach has gone downhill.  I hadn't been there in close to 10 years before the last time I went there, and everything was so old, dirty, and trashy.  I used to remember Broadway at the Beach being sooo cool with the shops and attractions and the last time it seemed like a lot of the same tourist trap shops that were everywhere else had moved in.  Even the service at places like the Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood went down.

Sigh...Columbia.  I love the town.  I went to school at Columbia College for a year and dated a guy down there for awhile.  The guy I dated lived about 3 blocks off the questionable area of Two Notch Road, and Columbia College...well if you know where it is, you know what type of neighborhood it is in.  In other words, I got to know the ghetto areas pretty good.  Despite having a transexual hooker approach me at a traffic light, I still love the city.  I guess its because there's a lot of fun stuff to do down there...like the zoo and the wonderful nightlife if you're a college student.

  • We should help out the newest inquiry on the Travel board!
  • I feel for both the OP and the girl who thought that Sticky Fingers was the best BBQ ever.
  • We are such snobs Big Smile
  • I find this post HILARIOUS because we are moving to Chas. Dh is there already, actually!

My friend's DH and his entire family (like, 60 of them) go to Myrtle Beach every.single.year. for a family reunion/vaca from MA. I've never had any desire to see MB, except that it looks like it would be a fun spring break for your freshman year of college (a la Shag)

Hey, it is decent! I wouldn't say the best, but definitely decent. I've had much, much worse, but that isn't hard to do in Boston...Embarrassed

  • Hey I love Sticky Fingers...then again, I grew up in Arkansas where I got BBQ that was a cross between Kansas City style and Memphis style...which is the exact total opposite of Carolina style.

Hardly anymore!  I've never got into college athletics.  Even now...I just cheer for the Gamecocks because they are the underdogs!

  • Im just posting again since this is the first SC post that Ive even seen get a red star.

    Way to go, OP!

Ahh. HAHA. I didn't go to Fayetteville, but grew up in AR too. Moved to Boston for college (and so to move to Charleston)
