Traveling through PA help!
Hi everyone- I am hoping to get some advice on a trip I need to make from the DC/Balt area to NJ for the day next Friday. I need to go to Madison, NJ (west of Newark) for work, and am thinking instead of taking the usual route from Baltimore and up the NJ turnpike, of going up 83 to PA, through Lancaster and then across 78 to NJ (hopefully that makes sense). It is only about 15 miles more from my house. Any thoughts on if that is crazy with traffic? I can do the train to Newark and rent a car, but I really don't want to do that if I can avoid it. I have to be in Madison from 12-2pm, so I have time to get up there.
Thanks!!
Re: Traveling through PA help!
When we are going to New England from CT we often take this route because we prefer to drive on 78 than through NJ on the turnpike. You can hit traffic on 83, especially in York/Harrisburg area but I prefer it to NJ, mainly because I went to college in Easton and used to take 78 all the time.
I don't think that sounds like a bad way to go. Traffic on 78 through the Lehigh Valley area can get pretty heavy at rush hour, but it usually keeps moving. It doesn't sound like it will be rush hour when you're going through there anyway. I don't know 83 South of Harrisburg very well, so I'm no help on that.
The only thing I might suggest is getting off 83 at 81 in Harrisburg. Then you can take 81 right to 78 rather than going through the Lancaster area where you would have to get on 222 to get to 78.
