Married Checking Accounts?

DH and I have always had a joint checking account.  We never kept our money seperate.  I never realized it, but a lot of our friends have seperate accounts between husband and wife.  Do you guys do the seperate or together thing?  I'm just curious...we don't really have issues with our method...just sometimes not wanting him to see my shopping sprees Tongue Tied

Re: Married Checking Accounts?

  • We have a joint checking account as well as individual ones.  We don't keep much money in the individual ones...like under 100 each.  Its mainly so we can do gifts for each other without the other finding out. If either transfers a large amount into our own account, we let each other know why.
  • we have 2 checking accts, both of which are joint. dh and i are on the same pg re: our finances, so we've never had a money argument. we pretty much run all purchases by the other person, and plan out big ticket purchases, so no problems there.

i think it definitely depends on the couple though. i know my parents do the whole separate thing, and it's works fine for them. but we've just never had a need to separate anything.

We have a joint and each of us have an individual account as well.  The majority of our paychecks go into the joint.  The money deposited into the individual accounts is used for eating out at lunch during the week, and any other individual expenses (like DH's golfing or my clothes shopping).

  • We have a joint account.  We have an agreement if we individually are going to spend more than 100 dollars on something (with the exception of groceries) then we need to inform the other.  It works for us.
  • Before we got married, we lived together but had separate accounts. Once we got married, I closed mine and joined his. We don't really have a reason for separate ones now. I like just having that one for checking.

  • We have a joint account. We've never had a problem with it. Like pp if we're going to spend more than say $100 we talk to the other person. When we do gifts we set limits so both of us get the set amount out in cash so the other one can track purchases.

I have found that several of our friend do the separate accounts. I think it just depends on the couple.

  • All of our accounts are joint. checking, savings, money market, car loan, everything. :) It works for us.
  • All of our accounts are joint. It works for us.
  • We still have our checking accounts from before we were married, and that is where our respective paychecks are direct deposited. We have a joint account that we contribute a specific amount to each month (based on the budget for that month) and that is how we pay for all "shared" expenses (including any savings goals that we are working towards).

  • We have a joint account for everything and I have a seperate account for my Mary Kay business.

  • We have a joint checking account.  Like pp said we discuss before we make a purchase and we also plan big ticket items.  This works for us.
    Siggy coming soon....
  • All of our accounts are joint accounts.  I manage our money and separate accounts would be too much for me to keep up with (lazy I know).  It works really well for us.

  • All of our accounts are also joint.  It is enough work having to keep track of everything for our one checking and savings account.  I could not imagine keeping up with everything for two or more!

  • Yeah, we have one joint account and we also have our own separate accounts. It may seem complicated but it's really not because we keep our incomes in the joint account but if we get extra bonuses at work or extra income generated by ourselves, that goes into each of our separate accounts.

  • As soon as we got married we joined our checking and savings account. It was different at first, especially since we had just bought a house and had that big house payment! After a while it go a lot better and we managed our accounts much better. Not too many of our friends are married, but I know that at least one couple has separate accounts.
