1st time to NYC - would you recommend a tour?
Hi! DH and I are coming to NYC next weekend for the US Open. We'll have Friday to tour around the city. We thought a good way to see the city would be to do one of those double decker bus tours...but I don't want to spend several hours of our free day doing that if it's not going to be worth our while. Would it be best to do the tour or just walk around on our own?
We're staying at the Marriott Marquis Times Square (super excited!). Also if you have any favorite restaurants or shopping (think bargain) I'd love to hear that as well! DH and I are pretty laid back and casual and prefer not to go to the ultra trendy spots - laid back pubs with great patios are more our style!
Thanks!

Negative. I would not recommend doing a double decker tour bus. But...if you don't feel like you can navigate a city street map and a subway system, maybe that is the best way to see a lot of sights.
check out this site: its more for local new yorkers, but their "walks" would give you a good sense of different neighborhoods.

If you are staying in Time's Square - definitely venture over to 9th Ave (pretty much between 42nd street - 59th street) There are a ton of amazing restaurants over there - and they are more non-touristy places.
Hope you have a great time!
I wouldn't recommend a double decker bus, very touristy. And you'll be stuck in traffic all day baking in the sun. I would recommend a walking tour, I know a few people who have done them and I've been meaning to go on a few myself. Here's a link that might help: http://www.bigonion.com/
As for restaurants, there are a ton in the area, but DH and I recently ate at Blue Fin in Times Square and it was absolutely delicious. http://www.brguestrestaurants.com/restaurants/blue_fin/index.php
