DH and I are in the process of moving to probaby either the Beloit area (or near there) or Maryland because of DH's job opportunities. We currently live in NYC, but are from the Midwest (Omaha). I am just curious if anyone lives in the area and would love any feed back anyone can provide. We are ready for small town life again, so that doesn't scare me. TIA
Stuff to do in the area?
How are the schools?
How bad are the winters?
Shopping?
Likes/Dislikes?
Re: Possibly moving to WI
Honestly, Beloit has always been a relatively depressed area. To the south is Rockford, IL, which has some problems. To the north (about 15 minutes) is Janesville, which is losing its GM plant (probably for good) and many related industries. There is record unemployment there.
wow, that was depressing...
My IL's (and dh) are from south beloit so pretty close. ?DH grew up on a dairy farm so for him it was a lot of other farm kids, small-ish schools. ?As far as stuff to do I'm sure it's much like any other small town, movie theater etc. ?Rockford isn't too far away and madison and chicago are pretty reasonable too. ?From my time there and some friends in rockford (dh's high school friends) it seems like a nice place, but a little too small town for my taste, but that's just me.
E?
I went to college in Beloit and I'm originally from Janesville -- I lived there until I was 22. I wouldn't move to Beloit. The schools are not good (overall), and it's just a rough city. I honestly would move to Janesville (we live in Madison now). True about the GM plant, but that's not the only thing that the city has as far as industry. I think they will recover, even if they lose the plant (although that might be mostly hometown nostalgia talking).
The schools are actually quite good in Janesville, from elementary up to high school. I would have no hesitation about sending my son to Janesville schools. The home prices are decent (quite good right now actually!), there are very nice parks and trails, and it's only about 30 minutes from Madison if you're looking for more diversity in restaurants/activities. Crunchy is right that Madison definitely has more going on than Janesville, but Janesville is also a lot cheaper and is closer to Beloit. Just my two cents.
