Okay, here's my two issues:
1. Last year when I paid my taxes, the state sent me a "Pre-payment penalty" of $330. I had to call 3 times to get them to reverse and no one in Frankfort could explain to me why in the world I would be charged for paying early.
2. This year I sent Kentucky $750. It cleared on 5/4. On 5/18, they sent me a bill for $2444. I had to wait on my refund from Indiana to pay Kentucky (we both worked in Indiana). I received my money from Indiana on 6/2. I called Frankfort on 6/4 to verify. Here's how my conversation roughly went:
Me: Okay, I just got paid by the state of Indiana. How much do I owe you guys?
Rep: $2444.
Me: Do you have my payment of $750 on record, then?
Rep: Yes.
Me: Okay, so the $2444 is what I owe after the $750 was applied?
Rep: No.
Me: Excuse me?
Rep: No. I can go ahead and take care of that for you right now, ma'am.
Me: Um...so you're telling me you can see I paid you, you cashed the check, but you didn't apply it to what I owe?
Rep: Um, yes.
Me: Why would this happen?
Rep: I don't know ma'am, but I'd be happy to correct everything and send you a new bill out today.
Um, hello state of Kentucky?? Did you think that was a freakin' gift?? I was livid, let me tell you. How could they cash my check, post it to my account, yet not deduct it from my money owed? They cashed it 14 days before they sent me a new bill. WTF?
I'm actually putting my house up for sale on Monday because I am so sick of crap like this. The permits, the stupid taxes...I could go on. And to be honest, the rate of 3.4% for Indiana residents state income tax is much more appealing than the 5.8% KY has us paying.
It's a shame I am leaving over taxes. I adore the people here and the scenery is beautiful. I just can't get over getting screwed out of an extra money I have by the freaking state.
