New Nestie moving to KC soon!

Hey girls.

I'm in Columbia now, finishing up school, but my FH and I are planning on moving to the KC area in a year after we get married and I graduate.

I'm a compulsive planner, so I'm already looking at apartments, and I was wondering if I could glean any advice from you ladies about the area. ?My mom and her brother (and his fam) all live in Overland Park, but it seems a bit pricey although very nice. ?FH's brother lives in north KC, which seems like a VERY long drive from everything.

Any advice on areas to check out and areas to avoid before we move??

Re: New Nestie moving to KC soon!

  • Welcome! The girls on here are wonderful and will be happy to help you with anything and everything you need!

I think you'll want to know a little more about what you and DH will be working before you decide on where you want to live. KC is pretty small but if you live on one side and have to commute to the other it will get old fast.

I've lived all over KC (and I'm a Realtor so I am constantly driving all over KC) and think you can find a nice area no matter where you want to be.

  • Yay for Columbia! I was born and raised, there, just got married there on May 16th.  I have friends that live in OP, but they pay more in RENT for a OP townhome then we pay in mortgage!  It's pretty ridiculous.  Is there are certain location you want to stay around?
  • Welcome! Will you be on the KS or the MO side?

  • Well, FH is planning on attending JCCC, so we'll probably want to stay near that. ?I'm going into advertising, but I don't know where i'll be working yet. ?I don't mind a commute, I want the cheaper tuition at JCCC for living in Johnson County! ?

But still... meh... I do feel sad to leave the MO side, since I've lived in MO my whole life and have a better understanding of Missouri state politics, etc. ?

I've heard that alot of KC suburbia is "meth centric." But I'm guessing those rumors are overwrought. ?I think every town in the midwest thinks they're the meth capital of the world, haha.

?-- and yay for Columbia residents! ?Where did you get married here, if you don't mind me asking? ?Im a J-school student here. ?Love the town, but still somewhat glad to be moving to a bigger place in a year.?

  • We got married at Firestone Baars Chapel, with the reception at Kimball Ballroom.  I actually miss Columbia a lot, sort of wish we could move there :)
  • Aww, are you not liking KC?
  • We like it, but Columbia, IMO has the best mix of big city/small town.  We'll be here for at least the next three years though, so I'm learning to love it!
  • I do agree that it's nice to have a smaller town feel, but some things about Columbia infuriate me. ?Namely roadwork right now! ?Drives me absolutely bonkers.
  • I recommend looking at Olathe, Lenexa and Shawnee. :)
  • Overland Park is also pretty good (this is actually where JCCC is). Leawood is pretty pricey but is very nice.
  • Thanks for the advice, ladies!  I like Columbia but I am ready for a change of scenery, I wish my move to KC was coming sooner!
