Volunteer/Donate to 3rd world?

I dream of someday going on a vacation volunteer experience and building fresh water wells, or helping hungry people become self-sufficient- that kind of thing. I also work in an industry where I could maybe help plan community buildings/cities and would love to do something in that area.

In the meantime, I need to find short-term ways of helping. Have you volunteered your time in another country? How did you get involved in it? What are some organizations that I can contact to find out more?

Re: Volunteer/Donate to 3rd world?

  • I volunteered in Belize. We built homes it was through Habitat for Humanity.
  • I'm in soup kitchens all the time. I've also been part of groups that read to children in the hospital. In college, I spent two weeks in Haiti on a mission helping to repair some homes that had been damaged in storms. If you contact your local church, they can give you some info on programs they work with or sponsor.
  • Oh- and, if I have offended anyone with the use of the term "3rd world", I apologize. I now know that it is most appropriate to use, "developing country" or "emerging nation". Sorry. Smile

  • Although they don't send volunteers overseas, World Vision is an AMAZING global aid organization you can donate time and money to. They do all kinds of smart aid, teaching people to fish rather than giving them a fish (literally, that is one of their programs!). They provide livestock and seeds for families to start farms, grant small business loans for women, dig wells for clean drinking water in villages, and send children to school. They launched a huge campaign to stop sex trafficking. They are basically everywhere in the world where there is a humanitarian need. You can browse their site to find just about any cause you are passionate about to donate to. Follow the link below and click on "Ways to Give":

They also have volunteer opportunities here in Chicagoland:
