Child modeling anyone?

A friend of mine who lives in NYC is trying to convince me to submit photos of my son (mostly because she's doing it with her daughter) to some of the agencies in NYC.  I think she is crazy for wanting to do it, but I mentioned it to my DH and he wasn't resistant at all to the idea (I was shocked.)  I really don't like the idea of "pimping out" my son but was wondering if anyone had known someone who did it.

Also how much money are we talking here?  Smile

Re: Child modeling anyone?

  • Stay away. . .stay far away.  I speak from experience.  It's a bad scene.
  • Oh no!  I hope sweet Ava wasn't put in any bad situations.

Do you mind expanding?  If its too much to talk about I completely understand.

I guess my gut was right!

  • October, why is it bad? I figure, the kid could get some money, you put it in a nice account and it can help pay for college. I mean, we all see Lindsay Lohan, but if you take your child out of it like when their 7, and then they can be normal children, I don't see the harm...but i don't speak from experience.

  • My biggest concern is that the well being of my son would be so secondary on these photo shoots.  I used to work indirectly in catalog design so I know how long these shoots can last, and how critical it is to get "that shot" -- so critical that the child's needs could be overlooked.
  • No, not Ava - I.would.never.

My sister and I were both in modeling and commercials when we were younger it's brutal.  And it doesn't do anything for your self esteem.  You're competing for who's cuter, whose kid is more congenial, who can outshine the other.  Forget 6 or 7, at 3 and 4 you're creating monsters.  You have to see the waiting room.  It's enough to make you vomit.  We have very close family friends who are agents.  Their 7 children were in over 1,000 commercials.  You know Mikey from the Life Cereal commercial?  He is one of 7 siblings (his two brothers played his brothers in the commercial) - and all of them wish they had never been a part of it.  Their mom has an agency  - she has represented Ian Zeiring, Christian Slater, Ricky Schroeder, etc, etc, etc. . ..it's a nightmare.

Just my opinion and experience.  I would never get Ava involved with it.  Ever.

  • Yea, I just don't think that would be the healthy way to go for a child of mine either.  At least not commercial.  But perhaps print work?

  • My sister is in LA and her daughter does it out there.  She's going to be 2 in July, but by the time she's 3 she'll be done.  My sister always said that if Maya could make some money as a baby for college, why not?  As soon as she's old enough to be "competing" against other kids, she's out.

She has said though that the auditions are out of control.  Some mother stole my niece's shoe once, so that she wouldn't look as cute when she went in.  It's freakin crazy.
