Visiting Chicago!

Hi chicago nesties!  I'm from Atlanta and was thinking about taking DH to Chicago for a weekend birthday trip at the end of June.  I've only driven through the city once and stopped to eat a pizza, so I'd love some recommendations on what to do!  Good steak restaurants?  What part of town should we stay in?  Will we need to rent a car?  TIA!

Re: Visiting Chicago!

  • If this is one of your first visits... I'd stay on or around N. Michigan Ave.   Look for hotels on the Mag Mile, on Wacker Dr, in Streeterville, or in Gold Coast.    and if you stay there, you shouldn't need a car.  Taxis are plentiful and the CTA can take you just about anywhere.    Not to mention, the costs to valet cars at city hotels are outrageous.

I have a list of my favorite restaurants in my bio.   my favorites for steak are N9NE and the David Burke Primehouse.

The big thing I tell people is to take the architectural river boat tours.   chicago architectural foundation does them, as does Wendella boats, and you can either get tickets ahead of time or buy them at the intersection of Wacker and Michigan by the wrigley building.

  •  The Chicago Architecture Tour is great.  My recommendations:

Magnificient Mile (N. Michigan Ave., north of Millenium Park) is fun to see and has lots of great window shopping.  I recommend heading up to the 95th floor of the John Hancock Tower to the bar at the top.  There is no admission fee for the view, but there is a full bar up there with a yummy martini menu.  The views are hard to beat.  I also recommend a place called "Wow Bao" in the Water Tower Mall for a cheap and delicious lunch if you are on the Mag. Mile.

Chicago has excellent street festivals all summer long.  Check out the summer festival list here:

Also, I definitely suggest checking out Millenium Park with the giant "bean" sculpture and ampitheater (south of the Magnificent Mile.  Check out this website for info. on concerts in the park while you are here:

As for a steakhouse, DH and I like Chicago Chop House -- it has a great "Chicago" feel.  Have fun! =)
