Tell me about these neighborhoods
Mount Pleasant
Kiawah Island
John's Island
West Ashley
Goose Creek
to live in/schools/snobbery factor/etc.
We aren't going to discuss house hunting for at least a year (I'd prefer to wait 3) but DH wants to just browse.
Re: Tell me about these neighborhoods
Kiawah/Johns's Island are my two favorite areas outside of downtown Charleston.
I lived at Kiawah from 81-85 (born @ roper hospital, & my Dad worked for K.I. Company before it was sold) Kiawah is a very refined VERY well protected area-there's a guard gate that you have to stop and and know exactly who you're visiting or exactly where you're going-and you then get a permit for that specific area and nowhere else. I love going back to visit because some of the people that lived there 20 years ago still do-in the same homes, still as friendly and open as then. Kiawah tends to have the "snobby" label placed on it's residents, but coming from someone who lived there (me) and someone who went to visit (my husband....my boyfriend @ that point) Kiawah is great!!!
If you're hunting for security and short proximity to the market (straw market is a little shopping area on the island) KI is a wonderful place to consider!!!
Hope this helped-good luck browsing!! :-)
I've only ever vacationed at Kiawah and Mt. Pleasant. Kiawah and Goose Creek, if you are working downtown, might become quite a commute. My ILs live on James Island and I remember them saying that they got the most bang for their buck on James Island and West Ashley.
Sorry, don't know if that was much help.
IMO:
Mount Pleasant: I rented here (Runaway Bay), and LOVED it. Great schools (in comparison), fab restaurants, near Sullivans Island (the beach I go to), Shem Creek-great party spot. We couldn't afford to buy there 3 years ago.
Kiawah Island: too far out, children go to private schools
John's Island: near Folly Beach, some traffic, but can find great homes, schools okay
West Ashley: this is where I live, don't love it, but we could afford it. elem schools good, high school not good. Many young people are moving into Burns Downs (but I've heard mold factor is high) mm's house is for sale, and it's way cute and near way cute bars and restaurants!
Goose Creek: country, I taught there for 2 years, I liked teaching there better than Charleston county, a good drive from downtown. Many new neighborhoods where all the homes look alike, Park Circle is a new buzz word, look that up.
Most neighborhoods you drive around here in West Ashley have an awful section/scary, then the next street you see the prices jump drastically because little did you know they have a dock on deep marsh. It varies so much. Email me if you want!
