Thinking of moving to the SD area

So my husband is starting his own business, and so far its been going really well. The only problem is, most of the work is in the LA/San Diego area. Since we're currently in Bakersfield, he's going to have to start driving a lot more.

He really wants to move, and I'm game for it. Problem is, in Bakersfield we can afford a house with a nice yard for our two mastiffs. Not so if we move.

We have friends in the Oceanside area, and like the general area. But I just can't imagine living with two 90 lb dogs in our small apartment with us, and it seems hard to find places that have private yards/grass area, even if they do not have a weight limit and will take our dogs.

Any suggestions or hints? Do you know of a particularly dog-friendly community where we may have better luck?

Thanks girls!

Re: Thinking of moving to the SD area

  • I grew up in LA and have moved around during the past few years due to my profession.  Living in the San Diego area for the past 1.5 years has been a wonderful experience.  The weather is fantastic, the city is relatively clean, and there is so much to do and see.  I would highly recommend living here if you're attracted to this region.

You have a valid concern with the high cost of living here.  If you plan on renting or buying a place closer to the coast or city, you can expect to pay much higher prices than if you're more inland.  Many of my coworkers have chosen to live in the slightly more rural/inland communities and deal with a longer commute so they can have the land and house sizes they desire.

You may not have much luck finding an apartment that will allow two dogs at that weight since many have restrictions on pet size.  You could look into renting a condo or single family home if you are unable to find an apartment that will accomodate your needs.  Try searching websites like rent.com (it designates whether or not a complex is pet-friendly) or craigslist to see what you can expect to pay for your wants and needs in this area.

    Good luck!

  • I would check out craigslist.com  for a townhome, home, etc to rent since those are not limited to restrictions on size like most apartment homes are -

I'm also currently looking for a new rental on there with 2 shelties (I think combined they would equal the size of two legs on your mastiffs!) and it's difficult finding apartments that accept it but a lot of homeowners are willing to rent to dog people b/c they are having trouble finding people wanting to rent.  If you like Oceanside, I would look a little inland from there to find yards and reasonable rents but still keep you within 15/20 minutes of Oceanside - check out Vista/Shadowridge or San Marcos.   The nice thing about both of these areas is that there are a lot of large dog people in these areas with nice walking and canyon trails and both have dog parks (San Marcos just opened a new one in the park next to Mission Hills High)

  • San Marcos has a large inventory of houses, many are newer construction (due to a new construction boom in the peak of the market).  The housing there is very affordable and San Marcos is a pretty nice area.  My husband and I are toying with the idea of buying there since we can get a lot more house for our budget....I work downtown though and I'm not sure I want to tackle that commute everyday.
  • If your DH is working in both LA and San Diego a good inbetween location might be Fallbrook, Bonsall or Temecula/Murrieta. All of these cities are inland in Northern San Diego County/ Southern San Bernadino County so rent and housing is cheaper, plus they lie along the 15 so you'd have access to both downtown San Diego (about 45minutes) and Irvine, Los Angeles area (1-1.5 hours)
  • I have grown up in San Diego. I would recomend looking into Alpine. Its about 30 minutes east of downtown San Diego. My fiance & I recently bought a house here and the prices are reasonable & lots of land. I have a mastiff also, alpine is a very pet friendly community
