Day trips from Charlottesville
Popping in from Atlanta...My parents are visiting Charlottesville for the Look3 Photography festival. They are looking for some possible day trip ideas from Charlottesville. Any suggestions? They love hiking and museums. Thanks!
Re: Day trips from Charlottesville
Skyline Dr. is within a short driving distance. They can receive a map from the Park Ranger at the entrance that will supply them with stopping points and trails along the drive.
Monticello is nice and of course the home of President Jefferson; but my opinion was the $40 my DH and I paid for 2 people to tour the place was way overpriced. The tour was rushed and I actually learned more about TJ when we visited one of his other architectural accomplishments (and himself for the matters) at Belle Grove which is about 2 hrs. north on I-88. BG was the home of James Madison's sister and the site of a Civil War battle.
Tons of wineries in the area, have them ask for a wine map at a tourist and/or rest stop if that is something they are interested in.
Also, Colonial Williamsburg is about 2 hrs. south on I-64 and has way more to offer, IMO, than Monticello.
