Possibly relocating

Hi SC Nesties!

My DH is considering a position at Parsons in Aiken. What would you say are some good small, rural towns to live in? I am will be an RN in December so I would need to find a nursing job down there too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 TIA!

Re: Possibly relocating

  • I grew up in Aiken and my parents and ILs live there.  My dad works at the Savannah River Site, but worked on a project that placed him at Parsons for about a year.  He really liked it there.  Aiken is a great place to live, grow up, and raise a family.  I would live in Aiken and skip the rural towns nearby.  Aiken has really good schools, a nice downtown, and really nice people.

As far as nursing goes, you are in pretty good shape because the Medical College of Georgia is about 20-30 minutes away in Augusta.  There are tons of offices in Augusta, and many spill over in Aiken, so we always had great medical care.  The three biggest hospitals in the area are Aiken Regional Medical Center, MCG, and University Hospital, and they're all great.

If you need any more information about Aiken, just let me know.  You can PM me if you want to talk in private.  I can tell you about the neighborhoods, schools, churches...anything you want to know!

  • Real estate seems pretty expensive in Aiken, but maybe I was just looking in the wrong areas or something. Many of the houses were pushing $500,000 or more, which would be way out of our price range. Ideally, we would like to able to buy a couple of acres and build a house. We'll see though. I am getting ahead of myself, since we are not even sure he is going to take the job. The thought of moving just excites me!

We will be visiting friends of ours there in July, so I will have to check out those hospitals. They just moved there less than a year ago, so they don't know that much about the area yet either. Thanks so much for the information!

  • Real estate in Aiken is pretty expensive compared to other areas in the state (except Charleston areas- they're the priciest), but you can still get a good deal on a house.  If you want to buy a few acres, you'll have to move out a bit, but I don't know much about those areas.  The schools are better in the city, so that's something to keep in mind if you want to have kids.  Moving is exciting!  We just moved to Greenville, which is in the upstate, and it has been a lot of fun leaning about the city.  I hope that when you visit, you'll really like it!  (What's not to love? :))  And if you need anything in the future, I'm happy to help!
