Hey, you probably dont remember me... I am the one who asked you about a year ago about your texas wine picture that you have! I got ahold of the artist and I now have that fantastic picture hanging in my house too!
Anyway, I have another question for you... Dh and I are finally settled in Austin Texas and we really want a new puppy! I saw that you had adopted a lab from a rescue. I would much rather do that than buy from a breeder. Could you recommend the lab rescue where you found your beautiful baby?
Also, congratulations on being pregnant! That is so exciting! I hope you have a wonderful and healthy pregnancy!
Thanks,
Susan
Re: Lauren&Matt
I sure do remember you!!! I'm glad you found the print. We always get so many complements on it Welcome back to Texas! I lurve Austin!
And first of all THANK YOU for considering rescuing a lab. There are so many lovable labs in shelters that need homes. I truly cannot fathom buying one while another gets put to sleep. This is something I am very passionate about, as several of the girls on here know! We actually did not get Jaws from a rescue. I found him at a high kill shelter near Ft. Worth. He and his sister had been dumped on a school playground (probably by a "breeder" that couldn't sell them) and someone dropped them off at the Parker County Animal Shelter. They had 3 days Luckily, I came in the day they arrived to look at another dog and as soon as I saw his sweet face, I knew he was the perfect dog for us. ?I felt badly?separating?him from his sister, but she was also adopted out so that made me feel a bit better.?
?It took me 3 months of searching to find Jaws- and we refused to buy a lab. Rescuing was the only route for us.??I checked petfinder.com daily, and I contacted a few lab specific rescues and let them know what we were looking for. We wanted a yellow male (a lab mix would have been fine) under a year and a half old. We met a few through rescues, but they weren't the right dog for us. Matt found one at the Ft. Worth pound one day, waited for me to get off work, and by the time we got down there, another family had adopted him. It was a frustrating process at times but SO worth the wait.?
The girls on the Pets board are SO helpful... they come across as really hardcore at first. Just take what they say with a grain of salt. They truly have the animals best intentions at heart and several of them are deeply involved w/ rescue. They see first hand how cruel the over population of animals problem is... Feel free to lurk over there a bit and then post. There are several TX girls that could maybe help you find your pup.
Finally I have heard good things about this rescue www.hotlabrescue.org. Going on there makes me want to cry and punch someone at the same time. Those are all full blooded labs that someone bought and then?abandoned for one bs reason or another.?
But actually, the very best advice I could give you would be to just head down to your local shelter, humane society, or pound and see what they have. New pups come in daily Don't stress too much about the age. An older dog is just as easy to train (and requires less work) as a puppy.
Okay, sorry so long. Told you I was passionate about it!!!?Good luck and I'd love to hear an update!!
~Lauren?
Thank you so much for your information! You definitely are passionate about it, but I completely understand. I was sitting in a training class this morning and I was looking at the lab rescue pups and I nearly broke out in tears! It makes me sick how people treat their pets. People tell me that I am ridiculous with my pup, but he is my baby and I treat him like a part of the family not like cattle or something like that!
My preference is definitely a younger pup because I truly do enjoy training them. Yes, I know I am crazy, but I am a former teacher so maybe it has something to do with that. It just makes me so proud when people compliment me on how well behaved my current pup is (he is 5 yrs now) because I know that so much of it is a result of my dedication to him.
Thank you again for your help! I will keep you posted if we find the perfect dog!
