cherry tree

I think the cherry tree in my backyard is diseased Sad

Erik and I were out working in the yard yesterday and he noticed black stuff (bugs I think) on the leaves and a lot of the leaves were curling which doesn't look normal (I am thinking it is black cherry aphids).  He called an arborist today, who is going to come by and take a look tonight, but the guy said there might be nothing he can do since Toronto has banned all the insecticides he would normally use to treat it.

Anyway, no point to this post really (except maybe a heads up to ppl who have a cherry tree - ie Andrea - you might want to check yours.  I noticed others in my neighbourhood with the same problem).

I am sad, I love my cherries.  I hope the tree doesn't die.

Re: cherry tree

  • Maybe ask what he would have used if they hadn't (shortsightedly) banned pesticide use?  DH and I are making a trip to the states to bring back some contraband...  :)  Might be worth it if you can save your tree.  That really sucks, the pesticide/herbicide ban really pisses me off.
  • Have you given this a try (scroll down to the sections that mention aphids (there are 2 of them)).

  • Hey  Erin, I did see some weird black slugs on one of my lilies in my front yard, far from my cherry tree. I thought it was mud or something at first, they were so weird. It was just yesterday so I didn't spend any time investigating yet. I thought at first it was sludge from our eavetroughs because DH cleaned them out last weekend. Maybe that is a good sign for you, if it's on something other than a cherry tree? I don't think there are any on my cherries, just a few caterpillers.

Speaking of trees, do you have any use for some maple trees? We have a couple that are 6-10 feet tall, they are weeds in my yard, and I was planning on chopping them off, but if you want to plant them I can dig out the roots. They are pretty tall but flexible (they are only a couple years old) so it could probably curl up and fit in a normal trunk. We also have a couple baby cherries growing if you want. We also sadly have to cut down one of our pear trees, because we are getting a shed. Do you have any use for a very fruity hybrid pear tree? It's about 15 feet tall. The pears are super tasty.

  • whoops just re-read your post. Our cherry tree did have some tiny black bugs, maybe tiny little beetles. I noticed them a couple weeks ago but they seemed to have dissipated since then. Were they really tiny (like pin heads)?

I think it's normal to have a few leaves curled and it might be from something else. let me know if you learn anything from the abourist!

*ETA* just googled black cherry aphids, and they do look like the bugs I saw near the cherry tree... Doesn't seem to have done any extreme harm though, but our tree is pretty big and the leaves are not right at eye level so maybe I just couldn't spot the damage.

  • Thanks girls for the tips, and the link.  Will look into that.

Thanks for the offer, that's very sweet of you!   Unfortunately we just don't have room for another tree.  We already have two huge maples and an evergreen in the front, and the back is really only big enough for the cherry tree.  Too bad, because I would love a pear tree!

I didn't look at them up close, so I'm not sure exactly what they look like.  But when I read about the black cherry aphids, it did talk about the leaves curling as a symptom.. which is what led me to believe that it might be the aphids.  The other tree in my neighbourhood that looks to have the same problem looks really bad, like it's much more advanced than my tree.  The leaves are all withering away and really curled at the ends of the branches, and there are way less cherries than there should be.

  • oh yikes. :(

I don't know much about gardening or trees, but I do love love LOVE cherry trees. I hope yours can be saved!
