DH is currently enrolled in an alt. cert. program (iteachtexas). He has passed his 4th-8th generalist test with the state and has his letter of elligability and has started applying to districts.
I am trying to help gather info for him, as none of his teacher friends did and alternate program really. Some districts you apply to the district and others you apply to the school. I know he plans on calling the schools he has applied with to follow up.
Does anyone know about how long it took them to hear back from districts/schools? Any tips on trying to find a job or districts to apply to? Any insight would be appreciated!
Re: another teacher question
Honestly, I got my first teaching job because I knew somebody who worked at the campus and they put in a good word for me. If he has teacher friends, I'd reach out to them. It is really hard for an alt cert to get their foot in the door without ever substituting, arranging classroom observations or personally meeting someone at a job fair.
I think most job fairs are done at this point. If he attended one, I'd try to follow up with the principals he met there. I'm not sure how long it would take ... but don't stop.
Good luck! I know this is the hardest part.
I didn't do alt cert either, but here is what little I know about the application process, from my old district anyway. Basically, you have to put in an app/resume with the district?first. That way you are on file and if a principal is interested in you, you are in the main database. However, you can go talk to/email individual principals at specific schools if you want. Most of them are done working in a week or so, and get July off, so have him go ahead and get on that immediately. That way, when they get back at the end of July, they already have his name and info. Most principals don't get final #'s on their classes until later in the summer (due to school enrollment and also previous teachers don't usually have to have their resignation letter in until mid-July) so they don't really do their hiring until closer to the end of summer. I wouldn't worry if he hasn't heard anything yet- it is still early and typically alt cert people w/o experience are lower on the list of who gets hired. They get hired, just behind others sometimes. Best of luck to your DH- the education world needs dedicated people who want to teach!
