So we decided to start TTC (and my it's been a fun weekend) or at least not do anything to prevent getting prego and so.... now come the questions.
I'm already off of the pill, count that one step done. I was going to go get some Folic tonight.
What else did you do? Did you stop drinking while you were trying or did you wait until you were PG.
We're not telling anyone we're TTC and many people expect us to be waiting until I'm permanent (which will be a year or two from now) so I'm expecting some pretty great reactions if and when we get PG.
Re: TTC question
I didn't really do anything special in terms of health/diet etc. except for the prenatals.
I'm a bit older though, and have an irregular cycle, so we were charting and using ovulation predictors.
Congrats!
Cutting down of caffeine if you're a coffee drinker is a good idea- studies show that caffeine increases likelihood of early miscarriage. I quit drinking when we were TTC, but that's more of a personal decision and not a medical one. As long as you're sure to test reasonably close to when you expect your period, it's fine as alcohol doesn't affect the fetus until you're six weeks pregnant.
I just took prenatals. I didn't stop drinking, but I only ever drank a glass of wine here and there....it's not like I was out drunk every weekend. I did chart, but that was just a personal choice.
Yay
Instead of just taking folic acid, consider taking prenatal vitamins. You'll need extra iron, calcium and B complex stores as well as folate.
I cut back a bit on the caffeine, but still enjoyed a glass of wine here and there.
When I was first pregnant with DD, I just had a feeling... so I cut out the caffeine and alcohol then, and I was right!
As far as "trying" goes, I waited 3 cycles off the pill (well, I didn't WAIT but I was so ill and not able to walk - remember Jan-Mar 2008? awful - and when I started walking again, we started ttc). I watched my cervical mucous and when it was showing I was close to/ovulating, we'd try. It worked for us.
For really thorough info, you should read Taking Charge of Your Fertility (TCOYF). It's big all over the bump boards. I also lurked BOTB to get familiar with stuff.
I got pg my first month off the pill. We were like you - not preventing pg. I was told that it takes a couple of months for your body to adjust being off b/c and I have some problems with my cycle and possible PCOS so I thought it would be forever before we got pg. Apparently that wasn't true in my case. I hadn't even started prenatal vit. or anything else b/c I really didn't think it would happen. That created a lot of worry in the first tri b/c I felt unprepared. I would suggest getting prenatals as soon as possible so that you're getting everything you need for a healthy pg.
Have fun TTC (sounds like you already are!)
I guess it depends on how much you're "not preventing it". Our stance was the same, we're just not preventing getting pregnant. So I changed nothing, still had caffeine and booze (too much more than once I'm sure) but when my reg vitamin was out I switched to prenatals. I knew the basics about my cycle and how it worked, but we really didn't put any of the pressures on us, we decided that if after 8 months we still weren't pg then we would look into being more serious about TTC.
We just had alot of fun and kept it light - sounds like you have fun part taken care of
Luckily everything worked out for us during the fun phase
