Spam

Hi ladies:

based on stuff I have seen in the movies back home, I know spam (the meat in the can, that is) gets a bad rap. I wanna know why...once and for all! I am asking because we had spam for dinner on Sunday night. Embarrassed I bought it on a whim. I probably ate spam 3 times in my entire life. I know I might regret knowing if its bad news, but anyone care to share?

Re: Spam

  • I think it's because its kind of a mystery meat, you don't really know what could be ground up in there.

  • I don't see spam being too different from hot dogs or bologna. But yea, it is made from low-grade scraps and trimmings.

In Hong Kong, people often eat it pan fried for breakfast or over their ramen noodles.

  • Oh ok...not as bad as I thought. Well since I only eat it like every 8 years or so, I am not running to the bathroom or anything at this moment. I also eat hot dogs, so my tummy should be used to that mystery/low-grade meat. Poor tummy.

Thanks again for clearing that up for me.

  • It's probably the same stuff that's in canned hash--which I ate as a kid on hiking trips with my dad. Something about being on a mountain top and really hungry must make it taste different, since I tried some at home once and was not a fan. I've never tried spam though.

  • Ditto on it being thought of as strange because of the mystery of it.  My former roommate is a Spam fanatic.  She says it's a West Coast thing.  It's smell when cooking is, um, interesting.
